Paying attention to detail is very important. Attention to detail is one of the most important aspects of a good Marine and a good leader The smallest of details are often the ones that can threaten the success of a mission, and can mean the difference between life and death. Civilians can happily go about their lives, blindly, with no worries about the small details of life that we as marines have been trained to observe. The United States Marines is an established institution with a history that goes back to November 10th 1775, and some of the greatest military minds have developed the very practices and traditions that are still in use today. Every aspect has been considered and every situation has been taken into account. Because of this, Marine regulations are precise so that we can survive situations that can and will be encountered in the field. It is especially relevant during combat scenarios , where saying one wrong digit in a string of coordinates can mean that a soldier won’t receive medical attention in time, or an air strike accidentally kills a large amount of innocent civilians. In the civilian world, many professions have the luxury of not needing The precise attention to detail that we need. As future Marine leaders though, we have an immense obligation to ensure the safety and well being of Marines we get put in charge of and our brothers to the left and right of us and this always starts with attention to detail, because we deal in life and death missions on a day to day basis. Attention to detail can and should encompass everything that I do, as preparation is necessary for survival out in the field. Its good to bring canteens, but they are useless if you don’t take the time to check if they are full. A loose strap on your pack could mean you being a hindrance to the rest of the group slowing everyone down. Or it could fail you when you need it the most and as a result end up getting your peers killed. I failed to pay attention to detail

But when we talk about a Sgt. of Marines, things are more different. As a Sgt. of Marines not only you are in charge of the mission. You are responsible for the life and safety of all your Marines. You are the one that will be making difficult decision that may put your Marines in danger and may cost their lives or yours to save them. World War II in the Pacific has often been described as a "Sergeant's war." Small unit leaders carried an immense amount of responsibility for the overall battle. On most Pacific islands, there was little space for wide, sweeping maneuvers, or operational-level tactics. Typically, infantry Marines would team-up with tanks, engineers, and other attachments to hammer against the enemy's lines. Example of such dedication to the mission and to save life’s of their fellow Marines on the worst situation and sometimes even costing their lives. NCO's such as Sgt. Smith were in the forefront of combat, leading their Marines and setting the example under the toughest battlefield conditions. Able needed heavy fire support. Sgt Smith determined to find it. He moved out on foot and located three Sherman tanks. Leading them forward, he pointed out Japanese defenses for the tanks to engage. Under his fire direction, the Sherman’s destroyed numerous enemy positions at point blank range. Sgt. Smith continued to lead by example. Seeing wounded Marines trapped in front of the enemy's positions, he made several trips across exposed terrain to rescue four wounded comrades. He also organized litter teams to rescue other trapped Marines. All the while, he continued to direct the tanks in knocking out Japanese automatic weapons that were pouring fire into Able's positions. Is amazing how NCO take ownership of their mission and the…

Sometime in a Marines career they are assigned to stand a post of some sort. It may consist of watching a building and others of guarding cargo. While on these posts there is no difference of the basics in which the duty is to be preformed. All posts have one main principle in common, constant vigilance. Neither contains room for complacency or distant wandering minds. Whether or not the post the marine is standing is in garrison standing outside his/her room or out in the field watching over the other observer with you, holds no value in which the duty is to be preformed. Continues vigilance is what keeps any post safe and secure. To be ever alert and aware of your surroundings, that is meaning of what it is to be vigilant. There are so many different and diverse techniques that you can prepare for the short time of being on post four. You can actually stock up on energy drinks and space them out through the day to help combat fatigue for your night post, another way to help with the fatigue is to constantly move about to keep the blood flowing. All these minor things will help a certain level of alertness. They are 11 general orders and they are one and the same wherever or whenever a marine is on interior guard duty. All marines are expected and required to know and memorize these general orders and be able to recite them when called upon to do so. Most techniques coincide with the general orders; such as general order number two, which states a marine is to walk his/her post in a military manner keeping always on the alert, and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing. This means to keep moving while looking professional and keeping your eyes and ears open to what is going on around you.…

A Marine must have the integrity to report such cases and depend on their senior leaders just like those senior leaders rely on those younger Marines to do the right thing to protect their fellow Marines. I have witnessed firsthand what it costs a unit when a Marine’s integrity is lost and they fail to live up to the Marine Corps standard. By teaching Marines the value of integrity and teaching attention to detail our Marines will continue keeping their integrity clean and living up to the Marine Corps standard leading to the overall success of our…

Marching enforced the ideas of mind over body. The emphasis of mind over body would ensure that perfect unity in the unit would be secured. Discipline is the focal point of marching but marching also promotes the enhancement of midshipmen candidate’s physique. This is due to the grueling long hours of marching which enhances ones physical ability. Marching is a key element of traveling, or Δx getting from point alpha to point bravo. As one is able to find the initial velocity and final velocity with the amount of time they perceive with the accounted data they have of the distance they are going, or will travel. This helps with finding the final displacement which in turn will help the Midshipmen Candidate with mental processing’s of the “brain” or mental states. Marching helps break Midshipmen attitudes that they have previously had before coming to NAPS. Marching helps discipline and understand the standing of other units and how important it is to not walk through marching formations during broad daylight. The audacity one must have to walk through a marching platoon of any company. The balls one must have to walk through a marching platoon as if he/she didn’t care of the consequences such as writing a 500 word essay on the Ethics of Marching which the word count was just broken 21 words ago. If these Midshipmen Candidates do not break their attitudes by writing such essays, in the future they will be in serious trouble with bigger authorities such as Chief Clarke, Chief Kennon, and or LT Miniter or CAPT Fielding, which are some of the names that I fear to be in trouble with. Good Day to you and I apologize for my actions taken on…

The bachelor enlisted quarters order says it plain and simple. While a Marines room is not in use all his/her personal belongings are to be secured in a wall locker and or secretary. The rooms hatch and head door will also remain secured as well. There are no reasons or exceptions to this for it is an order and disciplinary action can be a definite result of failing to do so. i.e.: writing a one page essay on the subject. NCOs in any command, company, or platoon will or I should say should be setting the example but we have failed to do so as a whole.…

Having proper accountability of your Marines is very important and crucial in many different ways. Most importantly when you have an accurate account of all your marines, you know that any given Marine is safe and not in trouble or in harms way, and more importantly you have at least a general picture of where that Marine is and you know if they are in the proper place that they are supposed to be and if they are there on time. In the outside world, many professions have the luxury of not needing preciseness, but there are those who have the responsibility of the greater good of society on their shoulders. Doctors have to be sure of their diagnosis or they could kill a patient, and architects must make sure that a building is structurally sound, or it could collapse on the end users. As future military leaders though, we have an unshakeable obligation to ensure the safety and well being of our troops and this always starts with attention to detail, because we don’t deal in lost profits or missing shipments, we deal in life and death missions on a day to day basis.…

How we consider others reflects upon each of us, both personally and as a professional organization. Selfless Service is to put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own. Selfless service leads to organizational teamwork and encompasses discipline, self-control and faith in the system. Honor is to live up to all the Army values. In my experience with leading people in the Marine Corps I would say that it is important to know these components and to get to know your people so that you can learn what their capabilities are in the workforce. In a combat situation you have to use your knowledge and your training to recognize fear and overcome it. Once you have done that that you are able to operate and make sound and timely decisions while under fire and pressure.…
