What’s scarier, the supernatural or the mentally unstable? Both are capable unimaginable horrors, but one might not exist. In the majority of Edgar Allen Poe’s stories, he is able to make the reader flip their view on what they believe towards the end, by providing evidence that can support both sides. He is a master at manipulating the reader’s thoughts and is skilled at blurring the lines between what’s real and what’s fake. In the story “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it’s argued whether or not it was all real or just an illusion in the character’s mind. Most believe that it was all real and the explanation is that the Usher family are vampires, which is the truth. His primary problem was that “his eyes were tortured by even a faint light” (Poe 26). Because of this, he always kept his curtains closed and his house dark. This provides evidence because vampires cannot go out into the light; it will hurt them. In addition, he can only eat foods with little flavor or that are completely tasteless (Poe 26). It is known that vampires drink blood to survive and this is the cause of not being able to eat many foods. He is not able to eat them because he can only handle the taste of blood. Both of these symptoms cause him to look pale and dead, as described by the narrator. This is another classic sign of being a vampire because they were once dead.
