“FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO”
The apostolic exhortation Familiaris Consortio is a document broad in the topics to which it extends its teaching. It also appears to have filled a gap that existed to some degree in the Catholic teaching on conjugal love and marriage prior to the preaching of Bl. John Paul II.
Familiaris Consortio is written for those living in fidelity to the Church's present teachings and practices in the area of matrimony, those who have become confused by the current challenges intruding upon the family, and even to those who live in unjust unawareness of the freedom and human rights guaranteed to them to have all the fullness that marriage might offer. Bl. John Paul II reaches out his hand to assists everyone struggling with the various difficulties in modern married life.
Bl. John Paul II notes in section six of the exhortation that the situation of marriage and the family in modern life is a contradicting one in the sense that there are both positive and negative understanding created. Some of the good understandings reached are the following: an appreciation of human freedom for both sexes, a promotion of education and love for children, and a promotion of the dignity of women and responsible procreation. And the negative result against the family are the personal freedom of the spouses carried to an extreme sense of sovereignty, the misunderstanding of authority and the handing on of values with respect to the relation of parents to their children, and the ongoing of abortion, growing divorce rates, sterilization, and an overall contraceptive mentality.
Everything is not well for the modern family, and Pope John Paul II reasons that the family is not just a part of an overall society rather, it is the very foundation of all society, and any attacks on its wellbeing must not go unanswered. According to the Pope, the family is society's foundation,
