The connotation of “The Calling” has to do with the imagery used in the writing by the writer, The Fat Rat. “Reason and rhyme--Grand and glorious.” This is a great example of alliteration in the song that repeats the consonant r and g. “Gold and diamond--Jewels behind the throne.” This is symbolism and it is symbolizing that the gold and diamond are like the ultimate goal in life, but first you have to work hard to get there. At the beginning of the song the speaker’s tone/attitude is calm, meaning that at the beginning of life it can feel like you’re in a place of peace. An example would be where the speaker says, “...Still and silent--Calm before the storm.” “Into the night--Out of the dark.” Is a great example of where the tone shifts because now instead of being of being in the dark you are coming of it into the light and starting you life and then your peace ends. The tone changes the mood to become more crazy, but wonderful when you come out of the dark and finally you can see the light and your grand adventure of life begins and everything changes. The speaker makes this obvious by stating “Living the dream- -Yours and mine--Euphoria.” When you have reached the goal of joy in life the you get that feeling of Euphoria when before all you could see was darkness.
