To help victims, social workers as advocates, need to realize it is necessary to address the root cause of problems of the perpetrators of violence.
What Is a Feminist Model of Battering?
Central to the feminist perspective on battering is a gender analysis of power. According to this model, domestic violence in intimate relationships is caused by the patriarchal organization of society in which men play dominant roles in most social institutions. Men will resort to verbal, emotional and economic violence if they feel their dominance is being threatened. Economic roles have left women dependent on men and unable to escape abusive situations. Men’s superior physical strength may enable them to dominate women through violence. Feminists argue that the way society is arranged causes violence because men hold the positions of respect. Men view women as childlike and incompetent. They may convince their partners that they are unable to perform adult duties like getting a job, or even driving a car. Social workers should try to link clients with others who face similar issues in order to build support systems that can be used for networking, support, and education. The feminist perspective and method seem particularly relevant in addressing social injustice in that it acknowledges that many of the difficulties faced by populations at risk of discrimination are a result of their interactions with the environment or with the surrounding systems rather than within the clients
