Though for the change to be interesting, the audience first needs to know the conventions of the genre that have been transformed. Mixing genres gives the screenwriter the opportunity to vary the narrative in, for example, surprising or novel ways. There is also the choice for the screenwriter of layering the story in fresh and stimulating forms. However, whilst, the narrative development of a genre has changes occurring: the changes still reflect the genre they are in. This observation is supported by Steve Neale when he offers that, …show more content…
The setting can be among other things a backdrop and as such unimportant to the genre’s narrative. Alternatively, the setting can be integral to the genre’s narrative when the theme, action or characters are influenced by the place and time. The film Passengers (2016) is a science fiction thriller set entirely on the star ship Avalon and this setting forms a fundamental visual part of the narrative for the audience. The setting of the malfunctioning, luxury, futuristic spacecraft is integral to their understanding of the film’s narrative. In some narratives, the setting can be antagonistic and provide problems which must be overcome. In the film 127 Hours (2010) climber Aron Ralston (James Franco) solely battles for survival having been trapped under a boulder in an isolated canyon in Utah, the United States of America. For example, the film Cowboys and Aliens (2011) featured both cowboys and aliens; being a hybrid of the western and science fiction genres. The audience then use their prior knowledge, gained from previous viewings of a genre, to decode the

He uses his analysis of the two media, the book and the film, to make his final argument that filmic novels are not good for screening. While the influence of film in these books, whether fiction or non-fiction novels, justifies in their story telling and development, the vice versa is not true for film (Murray 132-137). Filmic novels are no easier to adopt for film than the traditional novels of the past times. While non-filmic novels give the filmmakers room for interpretation and creativity in their redesign, filmic novels give a framework for the redesign. Creating a film adaptation of such books requires the filmmaker to either create an exact translation of the original or to conceive a new piece of artworks, none which is a hard job as Murray shows in Brooks’ failure to create a great film adaptation of a great book. He ends the article by explaining that filmic novels are not easy for film redesigns due to their complexity (Murray 132-137). Sub-literary novels, he writes, whether filmic or not, make better film redesigns than distinguishable…

With the large variety of interests that flourish within the society, it is no shock that genres exist, especially in film, as the definition of entertainment differs from person to person. A genre is a category of films that are characterised by similarities in the narrative elements and conventions found within the films. Genres are extremely useful to both film producers and audiences as it helps them narrow down the target audience and search for films that are in their range of interests. No one wants to watch a political drama overrun with teenagers or go into a cinema with the intentions of watching a romantic comedy, only to receive blood and gore instead.…

Most films have the potential to utilize sets of code from more than one genre, but only some can be considered multi-generic. This depends on the level of homogenization. If we use Ridley Scott’s film Alien as an example, it would not be multi-generic, even though it contains elements of both film noir and horror, because it is still science fiction that dominates as a genre. In opposition to this, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner uses both the codes, from film noir and science fiction equally. Because there is no dominating genre, this can cause problems for the viewer, since the two sets of codes leads to two different expectations (Doll, 1986, 89).…

More recently, the film industry has begun to combine two different eras of films and even combine two different genres of film. In the film Cowboys and Aliens, the writers and directors are able to depict the different roles of genders and classes that existed in the West back in the 1870s, as well as incorporating modern day ideologies into the Western film. This is done using a diverse group of individuals coming from a vast range of classes, all meeting up and recognizing that they are all different, but need…

Kerry Dirk, the author of Navigating Genres, explains about the topic of genre. In her article, Dirk argues that the word ‘genre’ is not limited to types of books such as, mystery, horror, action, adventure, etc. For example, she states in her article that,” The definition of genre has changed even more since Bitzer’s article was written; genres are now viewed as even more than repeating rhetorical situations” (Dirk 252). In short, Dirk is saying that genre is a method to help people accomplish goals. These goals can be accomplished by knowing who the audience is and what the purpose of one’s work is. In essence, understanding the concept of genre allows people to become better writers, but more importantly, to be more effective communicators.…

Genre writing provides structure for the author to work within, whilst the readers have a set of expectations to work with. With these structural expectations, writers are able to adhere to or subvert conventions of genre to make note and comment on prevalent societal and cultural values at the time of writing. When the text adheres to the conventions of the genre it is recognisable to its audience. Subverting or challenging these conventions and/or expectations is what makes a text memorable and noteworthy. Genre writing should be accepted as greatly as general fiction because genre authors are just as able to reflect societal and cultural values by adhering to or manipulating genre conventions as general fiction authors.…

Genre theory is used as a motion picture category based on similarities in either the narrative elements or the emotional response to the film. In using genre theory we create a short cut in the way we describe films. In order to understand genre we may look at several examples.
