The Five Bases Of Power
The five bases of power in the book are: (1) Legitimate power, (2) Referent power, (3) Expert power, (4) Reward power, and (5) Coercive power. The group member can influence others because of being elected or appointed, that means this person has legitimate power. Legitimate power comes from occupying a position of responsibility. People have high legitimate power should also have a high position of responsibility. For example, in the small group, the group leader or chairman should have legitimate power. This power can influence all of the group members. In fact, our group don’t have group leader or chairman at this time. Therefore, we need a person to be our group leader.     Referent power is the type of power that I use the most, because I usually gain power that is gained as a result of being admired by subordinates in the workplace. I like this type of power better in the workplace, because it is developed by trust from your employees. When I was a team leader I used this type of form of power it worked very well, because people felt a part of what was being done, that their opinions matter, and they showed respect to me as well. The three types of formal power are coercive, reward, and legitimate power. Coercive power is dependent upon fear of negative results. Reward power is dependent upon positive rewards or benefits.
