The Five Orange Pips Essay
In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle short story, “The Five Orange Pips”, Sherlock Homes and his sidekick Watson prove the mystery behind the deaths of the Openshaw male family members. Holmes is presented details within the story that lead John Openshaw to believe his family is cursed. However, through logical reasoning Holmes and Watson reveal the mysteries to the Openshaw family deaths.
The narrator introduces the reader to a gentleman named John Openshaw, who fears that his family has a mysterious death upon them. John seems to feel this is responsible for the death of his uncle, father and now he fears him too. It begins with the arrival of a letter, which is the one for his uncle that contains a foreign stamp. Even more baffling was the letter contained “…five little dried orange pips, … I began to laugh at this, but the laugh was struck from my lips at the sight of his face. His lip had fallen, his eyes were protruding, his skin the colour of putty, and he glared at the envelope which he still held in his trembling hand, 'K. K. K.!' he shrieked, and then, 'My God, my God, my sins have overtaken me'” (52). Orange pips were a warning sign, the reality was the K.K.K. was coming after him. This may be strange to the

As Holmes explains,” We did at last hear that somewhere far out in the Atlantic a shattered stern-post of a boat was seen swinging in the trough of a wave, with the letters "L. In the days of Late Victorian London, at a time when science is becoming more advanced, Holmes can use his knowledge to logically explain these deaths. However, this mystery and the evidence will forever be lost at sea. He will never confirm this mystery and we will be left forever wondering. One thing for sure, this mystery was

Sherlock Holmes is a very strange man. He is a detective who can solve a mystery without even seeing what seems to be like too much evidence. His ethics are very interesting. He believes that murder cases turn out to have very complex ways of happening. He does not believe in the solar system, which the narrator thought was very weird. His decision to join the case to help was a just decision, because without him the case wouldn’t have been solved correctly. Holmes seems to always stick with his beliefs, not matter what the situation was, even after the case seemed like it was solved.…

Gary Soto speaks to the romantic side of all of us with his poem “Oranges.” In the poem, Soto uses the innocence and simplicity of first love, combined with symbolism and imagery of colors and light to evoke the feelings we all had on our first date. While the poem reads simply as words about a walk with a girl, the use of light and color build into a reflection on the feelings and emotions associated with young love.…

In the poem "Oranges", the author uses certain literary devices to get the poems point across better. One of these literary devices is free verse. A free verse poem is a poem that does not have a fixed line length, stanza form, rhyme scheme, or meter. For example in verses one through four, the first time I walked with a girl, I was twelve, cold, and weighted down with two oranges in my pocket, there is no fixed line length, stanza form, rhyme scheme, or meter. The poet used a free verse in this poem to keep it in a casual mood. The poem is not about some great moment that would need fancy meters and rhyme schemes to express the occasion. It is a casual moment between a girl and a boy expressed in a casual way. The boy in the poem is telling the reader outright, because the poet wrote it the way someone would talk. The poem is a simple record of something that happened that day. So the poet wrote it in a simple free verse way.…
