The “xateros”, are leaves from a species of the palm tree. These are popular and used in the floral industry for flower arrangements, Palm Sundays, and funeral decoration. These are sought after for their elegant accompaniments for roses, lilies and tulips in formal flower arrangements. They come from areas of South America’s rain forest, countries like Guatemala, and Belize. Although not considered to be part of the rainforest destruction list, the palm plant actually spreads and regrows or sprouts into two new branches when harvested and do not die. After the harvest, the xateros is then shipped to North America and Europe where florists use them to add greenery color and beautiful …show more content…
Forrest ecosystems are very efficient in holding and recycling the nutrients and water, protecting the rich topsoil. One major reason for deforestation occurs when forest land is disturbed, mostly by clearing out acres of forest disturbing the natural layout of the land. Clearing out means cutting down trees for industrial use and fuelwood. When tropical rainforest are cut, topsoil is left exposed, lacking the nutrients from absorbing rainwater. The nutrients simply washes away instead of saturating into the ground, leaving only the nutrient-poor subsoil. Forest land conversion is another major cause of deforestation. This is caused by the increase of the population moving toward the forest and using the forest for their subsistence and depends on the forest for their livelihood. Building illegal houses inside the forest has doubled sometimes tripled in certain areas. The development of road networks and infrastructure has added to the damage by taking over forest land and its wildlife, continuously degrading the forest resources. Illegal logging is another cause of deforestation, this is driven by poor income and unemployment. Poor people are used to cut down trees and transport for cheap wages by organized illegal loggers. Moreover, unemployment and poverty tied with population growth pushes the poor to illegally participate in the logging activities. High market value, domestic consumption and high demand for wood also drives illegal logging. The jobless rely on the forest to provide security, food, and shelter for their families. Firewood is also another threat to the forest, the population relies on the forest to provide firewood. Uncontrolled and illegal ways of taking resources from the forest will deplete certain species, affecting the regeneration and conservation of the forest. Cattle ranching is another threat to tropical forests in Central and South America.
