Walking through LACMA there was a section that caught my eye and found it to be of interest to me. That section was the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan Art which was located on the Ahmanson Building, Level 3. There were various unique pieces such as vases, jewelry and sculptures. I chose the sculpture of Hope Athena to do my visual analysis because I found it to be beautiful. Athena was a Greek goddess of wisdom and war. The sculpture at LACMA is a Roman, 2nd century copy after a Greek original of the late 5th century BC School of Pheidias. The sculpture was made out of marble with neutral colors. In parts the color was dull with hues of ivory and golden brown. The shape of the body was rectangular with broad shoulders. The sculpture had her arms missing. Her head was round with hair coming down in vertical waves. She was wearing a warrior helmet from my view point I could not tell what the helmet had on it. The helmet gave her a powerful look. Her facial expression seemed reflective with facial features being symmetrical and smooth. The eye sockets were hollow and dark. Her nose was chipped and her upper and lower lips were thin. One of the focal points for me was how her robe or drapery had such detail throughout the sculpture. It wrapped around her body with great detail with vertical creases and folds giving the sculpture a realistic look. The Statue of a kouros represents a Greek male. With one foot forward, the statue at the same time, represents movement and is able to stand on it own. This also gives the over life size figure, visible weight. In this early figure, geometric forms seem to predominate, and anatomical details, such as the chest muscles and pelvic arch, are presented with somewhat of exaggerated lines. Although the exaggerated lines show where these muscles belong, the detail is still missing. Looking up and down this nude body, at this miss proportioned and lacking of detail body, the hair is what grabs my attention. The hair is carved with detail not noticeable in the rest of the body. As well, although the fists are clinched and still bonded to the body, the legs and elbows are separated. The ability to move around and inspect the statue makes a big difference than if it was up against a wall, or just looking at its picture. The legs, which support the weight of the statue, have a visible strength which is seen in the knees. The head is what carried the most detail, the ears although to far back, are intricately designed. The lines in this creation I believe would be considered implied because no definite line was used to create it. The shapes are more organic but there are some geometric shapes that create the masterpiece that rests in the Bellagio. The mass is implied, giving it a look of density that isn’t actually there, much like the illusion of depth because if you were to look up at the art it would seem as if you were looking into a new dimension that could continue as deep as you saw. This is an example of linear perspective, how you look-how you see, if one was to look up from the floor the art would look deeper than if one was on the ceiling looking 4 feet from it. The shapes overlap and were placed there for a reason, I believe it was to aid in the translucent ending of the art, giving it a deeper view. At the El Paso Museum of Art I saw many beautiful and wonderful paintings and sculptures but the “The Portrait” was the sculpture that caught my attention the most. “The Portrait” was sculpted by Frances Bagley an American artist born on April 7, 1946 in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Frances Bagley lives and works in Dallas, Texas. “The Portrait” was created in 1997 and it is made out of stainless steel and marble. I believe that “The Portrait” is an interesting piece of art because it resembles exactly what the title says. It is a portrait of a the artist or a portrait of woman. The sculpture has shape and contour which is the shape of a woman like in a night gown. The sculpture has mass. It also has texture because in the stainless steel you can see that is shine and smooth and the marble is not finish so you can see that is rough. It has color because even if the marble is rough it has different colors. It has proportion and scale in the part of the body from top to bottom as well it does have the proper scale to simulate a woman sitting down. “The Portrait” has design, unity, and aesthetic because the whole piece is appealing to eye since it resembles the shape of a woman with the different pieces of rough marble place inside of the stainless structure and even if the materials does not have a glamorous touch the sculpture does captivate the viewers attention because of its has beauty. In the following picture, there are various artistic elements and formats. In the background and foreground of the image, it is a neutral color scheme, consisting of whites and browns. In the center of the picture, you will see three basketballs floating in a straight line in an underwater tank. This sculpture really gives the image an architectonic feel. First off the table that is holding the tank is made up of linear lines and the tank is also made up of linear lines which makes the geometric shape of a rectangle. The bold lines around the tank are the contour lines. Inside the tank, it gives the viewer an attectonic feel due to the basketballs inside. The basketballs are made up of curvilinear lines and each ball has a type of writing on, which I will talk about later. Funerary krater: In year 1050 there is evidence of the development of a specific Greek style. This specific style is found first on the vases/ceramic wares. The decoration on the surface is a narrative of a funeral procession. The figures are very simplified; depicted into very simple geometric shapes; torso and hips are triangular. We see a body lying in state (prothesis) which means this vase could have been used as a grave marker. I do want you to notice that there is more of an attempt to display real human emotions. The mourners’ arms are raised over their head as if in distress. It is no surprise that the Greeks would acknowledge real emotional grief in this painting. I think this piece of work is more about interaction compared to the first piece, this is because different shapes filled with colours have been added in awkward positions, on the right hand side you can see a vertical thin rectangular shape which looks like it is filled with grass, this may be trying to create a see through effect to show the outside environment, also on the left hand side you can see a white vertical rectangular shape which happens to expand towards the ground, along with the grass I think this may be trying to create a sense of nature in the environment. This sculpture is thirty-one inches tall that has an octagonal shaped base. The Virgin is seated on a stool. It has five columns and bases with very short pedestals. There are shafts with eight corners, which have four congruent longer sides and shorter sides. The bases of the columns are like the Ionian, but the capital is very similar to Corinthian style column because it has decorative leaves that look like they are pealing of its bell. There are four longer pedestals that separate the columns and knobs with slightly visible pegs. On the left hand side of the Virgin Mary, a peg is coming off a pedestal, which makes it more visible than the rest. Its friezes has a Romanesque style arches that are characterized with its semi-circular arches connects the columns. The friezes of the arches seem decorated with bas-reliefs (low-reliefs) or moldings weathered but still have left visible marks. The five corners of the cornice were topped of a two pairs connecting cyma moldings, having an upper convex curve and a lower concave curve giving a view of two overlapping flat ovals, then capped with slightly bigger oval shaped head with its longer radius lies down horizontally. The Virgin is seated on a blue-green pad. The pad gives the viewer an illusion of a soft texture pad, other than of its convex shape but has a deeper concave surface where Mary’s behind falls. The pad has decorative features: twelve circles and inside these circles are Alhambra patterns both circular and Alhambra patterns are drawn with pattern parallel from each other.
