Evidence-based practice and the trends that influence healthcare and the future of nursing.
Evidence-based practice within nursing, “brings together theory, clinical decision-making and judgment, and knowledge of the research process; incorporating them into the evaluation of research and scientific evidence. (Blais, 2011)
The practice of nursing was at one time based on tasks that were intended for the care of patients with very little scientific evidence. There was very little understanding of the relationship between the tasks being carried out and the patient’s outcome of care.
The development of evidence-based practice in the nursing profession was driven by the demand for providing quality healthcare and the accountability of patient care.
The standardization of healthcare practices related to science and evidence to produce predictable outcomes is the intended effect of EBP. (Stevens, 2013)
According to Stevens (2013), “The recommendation that nurses lead interprofessional teams in improving delivery systems and care brings to the fore the necessity for new competencies, beyond evidence-based practice (EBP), that are requisite as nurses transform healthcare.”
Two major developments were established to further implement EBP for quality of care improvements
