The Future of Printed Books in the Digital Age

A book is a literary composition that is published or intended for publication containing a set of printed, illustrated or blank sheets made of ink, paper parchment or other materials, fastened together to hinge at one side. (Oxford English Dictionary 12th Edition) Although thousands of books are published even today, the digital world is slowly taking over these editions with their digital forms i.e online or E-books. The term E-book is a contraction of ‘Electronic Book’; it refers to a book length publication is digital form that is usually made available through the internet but is also accessible on CD-ROMS. Due to the high advancement and rapid growth in technology, very few people prefer referring to the actual textbooks anymore and instead prefer a version of the same text in a format that can be easily accessible through our usual appliances i.e. our laptops and smart phones. Many E-book software 's have evolved due to the high demand in its usage such as Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble Nook, and the Amazon Kindle, which are the most frequently used. These mediums have enabled people all around the world the ease to read their desired stories and novels from any destination, considering that an internet or WiFi facility is available. This practice is becoming more common as it is not only readily accessible but because it can be saved and stored on any sort of mechanism that supports its software therefore making it portable. With devices such as smart phones, smart tabs and notebooks, one can save an entire library that is not only light weight but available on the go, removing the burden of having to carry bricks on our back. Not only are students a fan of this invention but people of all fields avail this facility at their institutions, offices and even at home.

This method has also proven to be very beneficial for book publishers and the environment as well. Print publishing companies save on the
