In my personal opinion, I think that the Generals assemblage was a great success. Many websites and a book that I have looked at said that the statue gives off a humorous feel than serious. Most serious sculptures would only depict one rider on a steed, whereas the Generals has two men (one being our country's Founding Father and the other Simón Bolívar, the political and military leader of Venezuela). It is also to be noted that the way the horse is depicted in the statue--it is very comical. Marisol did not take the time to carefully craft out a noble steed, but rather created it out of a barrel. The barrel was then mounted on legs that used to belong to a once ordinary table with wheels.
Marisol chose to create the assembly out of wood, which pokes a great deal of fun at the duo of generals. Even stated herself, she says that the Generals are "indicative of all of her works". To add a creepy, realistic feel to the assembly, Marisol made a cast of her own hands to attach to the generals, as well as giving the horse its very own set of realistic teeth (which are a natural hue of gold). The faces of the two generals were meticulously done (especially with the detail on the eyes and hair), however some things like the detail of the horse's colour and the generals' legs.
When creating the Generals, Marisol's intentions were to give the people of the modern world a good laugh. She believes that people today are too serious and need to relax a bit when looking at art. Marisol states: "I want to tell the truth in a funny way". That is why I think this piece was a great success. I think this type of art needs to be seen more often in the modern world because sometimes it just gets boring looking at things that are too realistic or too serious. Artists need to be able to create the things they envision without having to be worried about people not being accepting of what they do. Sometimes the most simplest art is the most enjoyable kind of art.
