The book The Giver by Lois Lowry is my basic source for my papers. The story involves a young boy named Jonas, who lives in an a futuristic attempt of a utopia. In this utopia, there is no hate, no color, no war, and very little decisions from the citizens. Once Jonas is selected to become the community’s “Receiver”, he learns the truth behind the government and takes actions into his own hands to return society to how it once was. The source is reputable because it is the original book written by Lois Lowry.…

    The Gift By Li-Young Lee

Li-Young Lee’s, “The Gift” unquestionably communicates several ideas, some rather direct, and others buried within the rhetoric and composition of the poem. Although the meaning (of the poem) may be left to interpretation, one of the most prominent concepts of the story, in my belief, is the gift of love and consequent tradition of offering it to loved ones. In the beginning of the poem, the narrator describes his father comforting him in the painful situation of removing a metal splinter from his hand: “My father recited a story in a low voice. I watched his lovely face and not the blade.” The father’s calm and affectionate demeanor can be further attested to in the second stanza, “...I recall his hands, two measures of tenderness, he laid…

A Child Called “It” by David Pelzer is his own autobiography of his life as a child being abused by his alcoholic mother, Catherine Roerva Pelzer, who isolates him from the family, then abuses him, and nearly killed him through starvation, poisoning, and once stabbing him. Since Mother starved him for days, he began to steal food in order to survive, and when she finds out he has stolen food, she abuses him with her own “games”. Dave reflects on the “good times” in his childhood, because Mother was once a wonderful, loving mom, but the drinking habit, illness, and Father being gone took over her life, leaving both emotional and physical scars on her child which will haunt him for life. His father, Stephen Joseph Pelzer, a fireman in San Francisco, is a frightened man who as watches Dave is beaten, starved, and humiliated. Mother has stopped calling him by name; instead she would refer him as “the boy” to “it”. He was starved for 10 consecutive days, stabbed, forced to eat his brother’s diaper and a spoonful of ammonia, burned over a gas stove, stayed in the bathroom with ammonia resulting in a near fatal outcome, smashed his face into the mirror while screaming "I'm a bad boy", lying in the bathtub naked with freezing water for hours.…

After sharing, Jonas's parents ask to speak with Jonas alone. Jonas's father tries to calm his concerns by telling him that people are rarely disappointed in their Assignments, because the Committee of Elders monitors Elevens' interest so as to place them where they would best be able to do good work for the community. Jonas remembers the Committee monitoring his group of Elevens, but he is uncertain what kind of job he will be given. Most children are given jobs they show interest in, and so suspect their Assignments ahead of time. But Jonas has been floating from one interest to another. You’re eleven years old. All of the pain, fear, war, and hatred of the world has been eliminated from society. Everyone looks and acts the same, and your profession is chosen for you based on your abilities; at age twelve. The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, is a fascinating story about a different type of society and learning the secrets behind it. The movie of the same name directed by Phillip Noyce, is creative, but showed some very disappointing changes from the book. All in all, the book is far more preferable because the plot is far more exciting, the characters are developed well, and the creativeness is more descriptive than that of the movie.…

"The Handmaid's Tale" written by Margaret Atwood paints a realistic picture of a what a government ruled by a Christian theocracy would look like. In this country, men are the ones with power and women have virtually no rights. In the country of Gilead, there are many possible positions in society that a woman may be assigned. One of the lowest positions in society is the handmaid; their sole purpose is to bear children for their Commander. One such handmaid, is the narrator of the novel, Offred. Prior to Gilead, Offred was an average woman with a family, but she was split from them after the Gileadean government came to power and was forced to become a handmaid. In "Handmaids Tale" by Margaret Atwood, Offred is a somewhat average handmaid…

Although not accepted by Gilbert, the reader learns that even Rafe, whose life seems to be perfect, has problems of his own. For example, Rafe possesses the material things and the girlfriend Gilbert hopes for, but not family love. Not understanding of Rafe's problems and too concerned with his own self, Gilbert is depressed about everything he considers wrong in his life; he is overreacting. Just like him, nobody has everything, but in an effort to solve his loneliness, he wants a girlfriend like Rafe's. " 'It wasn't a practical thing, so it became obsolete when we went to the Sameness.' " (84) The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is told from the perspective of a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas growing up in a Utopian society. At the Ceremony of Twelve, where every Twelve receives their life-long occupation. Jonas finds out he has been selected to be the Receiver of Memory, the most honored of Elders. The current Receiver, called Giver by Jonas, transfers memories of pain, joy, feelings, and color to him. As he receives each memory, he yearns for a life outside of the one he has been trapped in for so long. This book proves that being "perfect" is not as great as it sounds. The Sameness, what the Utopian society Jonas lives in was based upon, has no real benefits to the community because there are no feelings, no diversity, and no choices.…

I believe that Jonas’ assignment as the next Receiver of Memory is an honor. It has only a few negatives, but many important and serious positives. I will start with the negatives of this assignment. First of all, he is not allowed to discuss his assignment or his training (even if he did no one would understand him without the memories.) with his friends at school, like everyone else did, nor with his family at home. But what makes this assignment look different and weird to many people, is that they don’t really know what it is to have the memories. There are positive things about this assignment, but no one except the Giver and the Receiver can understand. They have the privilege to see beyond, and by that, receive the memories which show emotions, colors, music, places and weather-changes that don’t exist in their community because of Sameness. Jonas and the Giver are the only people in their community who actually know, with the help of the memories, how awful their community actually is. They know that everyone is pretending, without knowing it. They don’t know what marriage is or how a real and normal family looks like and acts like. And the most important, is that the Giver and the Receiver are the only ones who can change their community, who can change Sameness and make everything like it used to be a really long time ago.…
