on being maids and their perspective. At first they don’t consider this at all and they would never think of agreeing to be interviewed. But eventually they get convinced and realize by doing this, there could be a change and make a legacy out of it. Skeeter is interviewing Aibileen for the 2nd time, she is still very nervous and ends up telling Skeeter that she thought she was ready but she really wasn’t. In the book Skeeter says “Aibileen, you don’t have to call me ma’am. Not here” (Stockett 169) This is during their second interview and Aibileen is so used to calling white woman “Ma’am” but to Skeeter, Aibileen is her friend. Aibileen will get used to calling Skeeter by her name but as a maid that’s what you do. Aibileen overcomes a fear of going from treating Skeeter like the other woman to treating Skeeter like a friend and calling her by her name. Add another quote and explain. In the novel_The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, Skeeter went against society by being friends/friendly with the maids.
Skeeter has a kind heart and no matter what she was always nice to the maids. In this time white woman were always mean to the maids and in this case Skeeter wasn’t. All the other women would look at Skeeter weird when she was talking to the maids/being nice to them because they were never used to anyone being friendly to them. In the book Skeeter says “Hi Aibileen, How are you Minny?” (not exact quote) Just out of the kind of her heart she is always friendly. Everytime she sees the maids she will say hi to them, other than the other women, sometimes they won’t even acknowledge that the maids are in the room. They will always give them attitude or anything mean. In the book Skeeter says “I just want to have the interview set up and ready” (Stockett 178) This is during one of the interviews and it really shows that Skeeter cares about the interviews and wants to be successful with them. If she didn’t care too much about the book and the interviews then she wouldn’t be very organized like she is every time. She shows dedication to the book and to the maids as she interviews them every time. She always has great questions for them and will respect their answers and how they respond whether they are comfortable or not. She is very patient with Aibileen and the other maids as well. She also let’s Aibileen have her own section of the book written by her. This was very …show more content…
risky but she got over her fear and did it. Skeeter respected all of their decisions and answers.
Others will say Skeeter wasn’t helping society, she was breaking it by causing problems.
Some will say Skeeter shouldn’t have published the book because it just caused chaos for everyone and it made the white society look bad. Skeeter went against the expectations of white society by being friends with the maids and being fake to the white women. In the book Skeeter said she would put Hillys piece in the league's newspaper but never did. Skeeter acted like she liked the white woman but she didn’t. She knew how terribly they treated the maids and obviously didn’t like it. That made Skeeter dislike the white woman even
more. To conclude, In the novel, characters show that people can grow and change by taking risks individually and as a society. She broke two cycles by helping various people overcome fears and by going against society by being friends/friendly with the maids.
