In some ways this is superior to our own society, perhaps it would be better to suppress certain emotions of the human psyche. We evolved from hunter gatherers who have certain emotions that might help in the wild like greed, and stress, but in a civilized society they don't really help us at all.
Every day Jonas goes to the annex room to meet the giver who gives him memories
of the past so that when he us older he may advise the council of elders so that they can prevent bad things from happening again in the future.
The memories that Jonas receives can be joyful but also painful depending on the memory, It could be a memory of spending time with family or it could be a memory of dieing on the battlefield.
Lois Lowry has created a world where People live in smaller community rather than one large community like the united states, but something that i thought throughout the book was that there must be other places that operate more similarly to how our governments operate today. There cannot be zero countries that refused to join this new system.
There could be explanations for this like this society was rebuilt after an apoclyptic event or something
