There are billions of people living in the world, and hundreds of countries with people that live in these countries. They all have a particular set of goals and achievement, and they all share dreams and values, and they are ready to work hard and sacrifice their life for this aim, and people in these countries have expectations and their personal desires from their life and countries. Among all of these nations, there is one that many wished to live in and be a part of this country. For many years’ millions of people have been traveling and migrating to America. People have always been talking about the American Dream, and it has been their goal to move to America and achieve this dream. The American dream could be different …show more content…
for many people. In the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams in his 1931 book of Epic of America.
‘’ But there has also been the American dream, that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement’’. (The U.S. immigrant population stood at more than 42.4 million, or 13.3 percent, of the total U.S. population of 318.9 million in 2014, according to ACS data). All these people come to America to achieve their dream. This dream could be having a house, car, financial status, better job, gender equality, education, freedom of speech and religion and many other purposes. In the past, it was easier for people to start their life in America because there was more land free education, and more jobs. People had different expectations and perspective of life. But in the meantime, Immigrants, and American citizens go through many problems to achieve the American Dream. Education, the cost of living and getting a high paying job is more difficult and different …show more content…
than how it used to be.
One of the most important goals for many people who live in America is education. Getting a good degree can help us to have a better performance in life. But it has its struggles. One of these problems is the cost of education. Tuition cost has increased in recent decades. In 1973, the average cost of tuition and fees at a private nonprofit college was 10,783, adjusted for 2013 dollars. The cost tripled over the 40 years with the estimated jumping to 30,94 dollars in 2014. With these prices most of the students should get jobs and be able to manage their time between work and school, to be able to study and also pay for their expenses. It can be hard for many students studying with these circumstances, that is why some people choose to try to achieve their goal through hard laboring. There is another option which is student loans. Student loans in the United States are a form of financial aid used to help more students access higher education, and reach the level that they desire. Student loan debt has been growing rapidly since 2006, rising to nearly $1.4 trillion by late 2016, roughly 7.5% GDP. Approximately 43 million have student loans, with an average balance of $30,000. Loans usually must be repaid, in contrast to other forms of financial aid such as scholarships, which students for most of the times are not required to repay, and grants, which only rarely they ask for repayment. ''(Research indicates the increased usage of student loans has been a significant factor in college cost increases)’’. Student loans put students in massive debt. They have to find a good job and try hard to repay the loan, and this also could prevent students from making big purchases like, buying a house or a car which help the economic to grow and reaching other goals such as saving for retirement or moving out from mom and dad's basement. These can be critical for people as much they could hurt the economy, it could hurt people as well, and it could stop them from achieving their dream. Education is imperative for many families and especially in the time that we are living in education matters a lot. Many high paying jobs require a good degree from college or university, and it will determine our class level in life. Another problem that people struggle with is employed, and getting a high paying job. An issue that is important is that for most of the people, but the highest paid workers the wages has been stagnant for almost 30 years. American workers must now contest with an uncertain and unstable labor market. Many workers are now holding jobs that require less training or might not be related to education that they have. Most people try to have more than just one job just to make things work, and after struggling with school now, they are struggling with getting the right job. It could take years to find a good job, but the person has lost a lot of money and time that he or she could spend with their families. Also, stagnant wages and unstable employment have caused income inequality and wealth. Which now is approaching to a high level that America has not seen in almost a century. We could get to this conclusion that the American Dream from some middle class or lower class could have vanished. Maybe because the income that some people receive is different than the middle class or lower class part of the country, this causes a huge gap between the various categories of the country. Some people say that European countries could be a better place to live because the incomes have not kept pace with increasing costs and prices. There is also another problem which is the participation rate that has been declining through the years. (Even as employment levels have stabilized to pre-recession levels, labor force participation rates have remained consistently low since 2000. Back then, the participation rate was 67.3%. According to the latest jobs report, it is down to 62.7% this quarter). However, many things that affect this rate, many are expected to return to their jobs or loses their jobs. Also we should consider the influence of technology, which has created many employment opportunities, it is expected to have a significant impact on the productivity figure in coming years.
One of the other important aspect of life that influences our living in America and achieving the American dream is the cost of living.
In earlier times one the benefits that draw attention to come to America was free land, and later on the low cost of housing or buying a house. But in the meantime due to the economy changes, the housing price has been going higher, and the incomes have not. So it is harder for people to afford to buy a house or pay the mortgages. Prices fell during the 2007-2009 recession, but now they are rising and going up again in many states. Since the home ownership rate is declining the renter's rate is increasing in the opposite direction, and cost of living is straightly related to the income that a household has. We need to consider the daily or monthly expenses like food, clothes, cars, insurance, house rent or payments, utilities and many other factors that affect our income. Since the wages were stagnant for many years, The government was not able to keep these cost steady, and now many people are pressuring on the renting market more than buying houses. There are some programs help low-income families to buy homes, but still, it will put them on a huge amount of debts that prevent the buyers to have decent saving for their retirement or buying the car they want or help their children to go to college. The majority of states, city or county has not enough affordable housing plans for low-income families, and they are supposed to rent. Even
American who is employed and work full-time jobs are struggling to find and affordable house or even an affordable rental house. Rent is even going higher because now it has more eyes on it and people are paying attention to renting so expectations and requirements for these units have been going higher and the result is the increasing renting cost. The main problem of affording a house is that the costs have been going higher faster than household income.
As we move further move further and the population grows more problems come along with it. People will always face new challenges in their path of aching their American dreams. One of the newest challenges for people coming to America was the recent order from our president that he banned seven countries from entering the United States, and it inconvenienced many travelers, Green Card holders and many others from those countries. After that Secretary Sean Spicer said that ‘’being able to come to America is a privilege, not a right.’’(Pbs.Org). But the problem of education, having a solid job with a proper payment and living in a place that provides a decent and reasonable cost of living and expenses, we could get to his conclusion that for many people The American dream is dead. Because no matter how hard they try, these costs are still going higher, but their income is still low, and it is still hard for them to afford the payments of a small apartment, and for educating they will be under an enormous amount of debt. Many people will get disappointed of achieving their goals, and some might quit, some might still have hope and will succeed. All these facts affect our economy and our lives as well, and some real changes must be done by the government to create the right situation and place for people who are trying to achieve their dream. The American Dream might have been changed or even dead for many people, maybe because they do not have hope anymore for going further, by all these issues things that come in their way. Also, what we expect from our country and our perspective of the American Dream could be different, and what if someone does not get what they expect they can get to this conclusion that their dream is dead. But still dead or alive, we should always try hard for what we believe in and never stop thinking about reaching our goals and dreams because these are what shape our personality, the way we live influence our society.
