My liberal education experience has been limited thus far in my college career as I have had the Liberal Studies major for merely a semester. Although I have had one liberal studies class my opinion on what a liberal education is and can be for a student has greatly changed in a single semester. I transferred to Grand Valley after completing my general education at small community college to pursue the Clinical Dietetics program, which is a Biomedical Science major that is essentially nutrition in a hospital setting. This method is an essential component to good communication and especially important if there is a problem to be solved. Cronon goes on to say that liberally educated people can talk with anyone, “They can hold a conversation with a high school dropout or a Nobel laureate, a child or a nursing- home resident, a factory worker or a corporate president. Moreover, they participate in such conversations not because they like to talk about themselves but because they are genuinely interested in others (p.378).” I think the last sentence of the quote has resonated with me the most, we are genuinely interested in others, we want to know what they think, how they feel, even how they process in their minds. I think my favorite goals from Cronon are: they practice humility, tolerance and self-criticism and they nurture and empower the people around them (p. 379 and 380). I think that I have come to embody these two goals the most out of Cronon’s 10. Humility, tolerance and self-criticism are cornerstones in Alpha Omicron Pi’s ritual and pledge, I feel and see these virtues in myself and in my sisters. We often use T&J, tolerance and judgement, as a way to support and educate each other in an uplifting way. I also feel that I have always nurtured and empowered those around me, it is in my personality. Helping people find their potential and watching them active it is a wonderful feeling for me, I live to watch people bloom into the best them. I have also won the “Sorority Mom” award from my sisters for always being prepared to help them and guide them through until the end. I am very thankful for these skills to better my community as well as the new skills I have expanded to and
