Proposal
Subject of my paper: The Golden Dawn’s influence on W.B Yeats’s writings.
I am an M.A student majoring in English Literature. I chose to write this paper in order to get an up-close image of Yeats’s personal influences. I believe that in order to get a clear understanding of Yeats’s writings one needs to focus on the teachings and history of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn which Yeats stood by through thick and thin.
My thesis statement:
Yeats makes many references to the occult throughout his writings and most of his works reveal how much of an influence The Golden Dawn was on his life.
Approach to the subject of my paper:
My aim throughout this paper is to reveal how the occult’s teachings affected W.B Yeats. First, I will give a brief introduction to Yeats and give a quick overview of the history and teachings of the Golden Dawn. Through some of Yeats’s poems, I will present how much of an influence the occult was.
Intended Audience:
My paper will be of an interest to most students majoring in English Literature as well as readers interested in W.B Yeats.
Documentation Style: MLA Format
I have looked through a wide variety of books, in print as well as websites that discuss the Golden Dawn’s history and teachings. I found books on W.B Yeats’s life and literary insights to his works. I referred to W.B Yeats’s Collected Poems as well in order to reveal the Golden Dawn’s influence through them. I believe such sources will be beneficial since, first, an overview of the occult will introduce my readers to the topic and second, Yeats’s life and his Collected Poems will be of a great help in developing my thesis statement.
