Jordan Baker is described as an “incurably dishonest” person. Some day Nick remembers that he had heard a disgusting rumor of Miss Baker cheating during a certain championship. Moreover, she is very irresponsible. In the third chapter of the novel she has a conversation with Nick on this subject. “You’re a rotten driver”, he says, and Jordan replies airily: “They [the other drivers] will keep out of my way. It takes a two to make an accident. I hate careless people”.
In addition, Jordan Baker is fond of rumors. At the beginning of the story she is one of the people who accept and spread a rumor that Gatsby “killed a man once”.
However, Jordan is a calm person. Through all the story she is indifferent and set apart from the main characters’ twisted love vicissitudes. So is the narrator, Nick Carraway, and that is why they eventually stick together and find themselves interested in each other. She offers comfort to him while he feels lost in the new experiences and acquaintances.
But even though Nick dates Jordan for some time, in the end he prefers to break up with her. She acts rather coolly during the conversation, but, as she confesses herself later, she “felt a little dizzy for a while”. Nick, on his side, leaves her “angry, and half in love with her, and tremendously sorry”.
Jordan’s actions after breaking up with Nick intentionally echo Daisy’s – both of them got quickly married immediately after parting with their beloved man. That is the main role of Jordan Baker as a supporting character.
This essay is devoted to studying the character of Nick Carraway. He is the narrator of the novel “The Great Garsby”. He provides the voice of the novel, sharing the memories of his travel to the East to study bond business in 1922 with the readers. Raised in a wealthy middle-western family, Nick graduates from New Haven, a college where he met another key character of the novel, Tom Buchanan.
At the very beginning of the story, in the first chapter, Nick goes to visit Tom and his wife, his cousin Daisy. This evening at the Buchanans’ house is a key point of the novel, because that is where he meets Jordan Baker and, more importantly, first hears of Jay Gatsby.
Nick is an open, naïve person, and this is one of the reasons why Gatsby chose him to act as a liaison between Daisy Buchanan and himself. That was a right choice, because Nick is friendly and eager to offer a helping hand. The very first reunion of Gatsby and Daisy took place at Nick’s house.
The book begins with Nick speaking about his honesty and unwillingness to criticize anyone. However, as the time goes, Nick helps Daisy to cheat on her husband, which can not be referred to as an honest action. Moreover, even when Nick learns that his new friend Jay Gatsby’s identity is completely false and fabricated, he still stays loyal to Gatsby. These two moments show the reader the development of Nick’s character.
The subject of this character analysis essay is Tom Buchanan. He is one of the key characters of the novel “The Great Gatsby”, and one of the antagonists.
The reader’s first impression of Tom is not meant to be pleasant. Tom Buchanan is described as a “sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward”. When the story goes on, this impression of arrogance and brutal force is strengthened.
When Nick Carraway, the narrator of the story, first comes to Tom’s place, he is sure that Tom and his wife Daisy fit each other and lead a normal family love. But soon enough he learns that Tom has a mistress. According to Nick, “the fact he had one was insisted upon wherever he was known”. Even in his own honeymoon journey with Daisy Tom managed to pick up some crew from the hotel they were staying at.
What’s more, this time Tom takes Nick to meet his woman. Even though Nick “had no desire to meet her”, Tom persuaded him due to his arrogance and forcefulness. Tom’s “determination to have [my – Nick’s] company bordered on violence.
It seems that Tom and Daisy have just nothing in common, and it’s only the child who is keeping them together. However, when their irresponsible and light-minded actions lead to the death of two people, Tom and Daisy calmly reunite, discuss the matter and leave the city, leaving Nick to take care of the problems and mess they caused.
In the novel Tom Buchanan acts as a twin to Daisy’s character, contrasting her at first and making the reader understand that she is just as cruel as her husband is by the end of the story.

When Nick was in the car with Jordan, she was driving so recklessly she side-swiped the button of a man's coat. Nick brought this to her attention when he said "You're a rotten driver." Jordan made the absurd remark of saying she was careful, which was clearly not true. When Nick said "Suppose you meet someone as careless as yourself?", she made it known that she hates careless people, and hope she never meets one. This was very contradictory because she is not careful, and just wants everyone else to be because she can't have the burden of taking responsibility for her actions. Jordan is the most shallow cahracter in the book, and according to Nick "incurably dishonest".…

In the book it seemed very much so that Jordan Baker and Nick were a thing, after their tea date it describes Nick and Jordan having a moment where they kiss. The fact that nick doesn’t get home until two in the morning it seems that it worked out pretty good for him. In the film you can see that there may be some feelings between the two but never shows the interaction of nick drawing her closer and then eventually as he describes “this time I drew here even closer this time to my face”. Although in the movie he still doesn’t get home until very late at night. When first introduced, Jordan is just a friend of Daisy’s who is a golfer, and little else is known about her. As Nick and Jordan start to form a relationship, it is apparent that Jordan has a problem with lying. Nick realized that she was never up front with him, and ‘She was incurably dishonest. She wasn’t able to be at a disadvantage and, given this unwillingness, I suppose she had started dealing in subterfuges when she was very young..’(Fitzgerald 58). This quote means to say that Jordan lies about anything and everything, simply to put herself at the top, with the repercussions meaning nothing to her. ‘At Jordan’s first big golf tournament there was a row that nearly reached the newspapers- a suggestion that she had moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi-final round...A caddy retracted his statement and the only other witness admitted he might’ve been mistaken’ (Fitzgerald 57). Jordan lying about moving her ball in a tournament is the prime example of her lying leading to her downfall. If the two men who caught her in her lie not taken their statements back, Jordan would have been ruined. Further in the novel, it is learned that ‘Jordan Baker instinctively avoided clever, shrewd men’ and that it was because ‘she felt safer on a plane where divergence from a code would be thought impossible’ (Fitzgerald 57-58). Nick learns this about Jordan as he spends…

The impact can be positive or negative depending on whether the people in the relationship get along. The impact can also be large or small depending on the intimacy of those in the relationship. Male-female love relationships tend to have a large impact in the lives of each other. Therefore, it is essential for people to take extreme care when engaging and disengaging themselves in such relationships. In The Great Gatsby, Jordan admits her love to Nick. Meanwhile, Nick has is ambivalent towards Jordan. While Nick detests her dishonesty in everything she does, Nick likes her for her liveliness. This is because a relationship with Jordan would get rid of the loneliness he faces when he is at home. Nick’s attraction to Jordan’s energy represents his quick adaptation to the vigorous style of New York. The fact that Nick views Jordan as a dishonest person shows that he does not trust her word. This is not a good thing to have in a relationship because in a love relationship both of the male and female must be able to trust each other. Nick’s statement that he is the most honest person he knows is false because Nick is not being honest to his girlfriend (who he writes love letters to) by engaging in a relationship with Jordan. It is not good to be in a relationship where both the male and female are known to be dishonest. Therefore, Nick’s decision to be in a relationship with Jordan exposes his poor ability to visualize the consequences of being involved in an unhealthy relationship. The act of leaving a relationship or breaking up from a relationship must be done carefully and tactfully. Nick’s lack of thought in breaking his relationship with his girlfriend (he writes letters to) shows that he is not very considerate of the feelings of the ones who are in a relationship with him. Hence, one can conclude that Nick is mediocre in dealing with…

The mysterious, independent and cynical Jordan Baker, known for lying through her teeth. Jordan has no problem lying especially if it gets her out of trouble. She lies about things she doesn't even need to lie about, for example, when her and Nick went to a house party, “she left a borrowed car out in the rain with the top down, and then lied about it” (Fitzgerald 62). Distinctly because she has all the money in the world to have it fixed, there is no need for her to lie about something like that. Jordan has never been known for being at the bottom, she is always seen as being on top, but is she really the best if she has…
