111914 In the book, The Great Gatsby, there were many characters that put on mask in order to conceal their imperfections. These masks are not visible to others and the characters that wear these “masks” are three of the most obvious ones in the book. These characters are Daisy,
Myrtle, and Jay Gatsby. These three characters are all connected in some way. Daisy and Jay use to have an undying romance when Jay was in World War I. Daisy promised to wait for him when he left for the war, but married Tom Buchanan. Tom and Daisy's main focus was money. Daisy did not marry Gatsby even though they were in love because he was poor and could not provide her with the life she wanted. Wilson says to Tom, not knowing that he is Myrtles other lover, “I just got wised up to something funny the last two days. Thats why I want to get away.” Implying he knew that Myrtle was having an affair but not with whom (123124).
Daisy Buchanan is another person who wears a mask. Before Daisy married Tom she was in love with Gatsby. The mask that Daisy wears hides the fact that she chooses to be married into money, and that her motivation for money is more important than her happiness. Daisy strives to be very high on the social ladder. When Daisy and Nick Caraway are talking, Daisy says to him
“You didn’t come to my wedding” Nick replies with “I wasn’t back from the war” (16). At that point, Daisy exclaims, “That’s true.” “Well, I’ve had a very bad time, “Nick, and I’m pretty cynical about everything” (16). When daisy reveals this, it seems like she claims she understands, but in reality she’s unsatisfied with such an excuse so another mask is that she no one really knows how she feels. The repercussions that Daisy faces is that instead of being with
Gatsby, her true love, she chooses to be with Tom for selfish reasons and loses Gatsby
