person you would find just by walking down the streets. Was there a drastic change between the movie and the book? How was each character perceived as? I would like to get more informed by reading the book, and see what the authors point of view was. F.
Scott Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in ST Paul Minnesota. He was a handsome, bright ambitious boy. He attended the ST. Paul Academy and was only thirteen when his first written piece appeared printed in the school news paper. In 1911 his parents decided to send him to Newman School. Which was a prestigious Catholic School in New Jersey. It was there where he met Father Sigarney Fay. Who notices his remarkable talent and encourage him to pursue his ambition to literacy. Fitzgerald first novel written was “ The romantic egotist.” Although it was rejected by the viewers and publishers they still encouraged him to keep submitting his writing in the near future. The audience saw his originality to be refreshing. Fast forward to his first novel that was ever published in 1920 “ The side of paradise. ” This novel turned Fitzgerald into one of the country’s promising writers. This all happened over night with the positive feedback he got from his novel. He later moved to France to spark new creativity. It was only then in Valescure where he created one his greatest novel “ The great Gatsby.” The Great Gatsby was published in 1925. Although the book was well received by the audience, it was only after his death were they determined the book was a good representation of the roaring twenties, and labeled as the greatest American novels ever
written. The Great Gatsby is a story being told on the 1920’s, preferably 1922. It is being told by Nick Carraway who was Gatsby neighbor. In the beginning of the story it introduces Nick Carraway, who just moved from mid west to west egg. Long island. Moving there he hoped to pursue being a bond sales man. He soon visit his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom. The Buchanan’s live a lavish, luxury life style as suppose to himself who lives more of a modest life style. Tom, Daisy’s husbands, is having an affair with a middle class woman name Myrtle. Nick later sees his neighbor Gatsby standing in the dark with his hand reaching towards the water, which is awfully odd. The previous day Nick receives an invitation to one of Gatsby party. Which is rare because he hardly sends anybody and invitations to his parties. Gatsby hosts weekly parties for the rich.. Gatsby is an incredible host but he does not interact with his guest. He just observes. Later on Nick and Gatsby become great friends. Soon Nick began to be around Jordan more but has his guards up considering Jordan has a tendency to be dishonest. Nick soon finds out that Gatsby is in love with Daisy Buchanan. In hopes of winning Daisy back Gatsby build and made his fortune on the idea of one day being able to support and win daisy back. He tells Nick to invite Daisy to on of his parties. As the summer unfolds Gatsby and Daisy affair began to grow and began to see each other regularly. Daisy began giving Gatsby more attention and Tom Daisy husband, began to pick up on that. Tom realized he lost his wife to Gatsby, but will also lose his mistress Myrtle all in the matter of hours. Wilson Myrtle husband found out she was having an affair but he did not know who it was. Wilson plan was to take Myrtle far away. Tom being aggravated he starts questioning Gatsby intentions with Daisy. Gatsby wanted Daisy to admit to that shed leave tom for him, and that her love was never for Tom. Tom knew Daisy wouldn’t leave him especially for Gatsby considering that he is coming from new money. While Tom comes from generations of wealth and power. Later on Tom discovers that his mistress Myrtle has been killed by a passing car. Nick discovered that it was Daisy that was driving Gatsby car that killed Myrtle. The next morning Wilson pays a visit to Gatsby house and murders him and shoots himself after. After Gatsby death Nick was in charge with his burial. What was strange was that no on seemed to care about his death. Daisy and tom where no where to be found they disappeared, and all the people who attended his parties refused to be involved with his burial. Nick being disgusted with how people are in the East he decide to move back to the Midwest. The story ends with Nick standing in Gatsby house and realizing everyone is just like Gatsby, trying to making something out of themselves. The main characters in the novel are Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, Jordan Baker, Myrtle Wilson, George Wilson Nick Caraway is a young man from Minnesota who fought in World War 1. He moved to West Egg to learn the bond business. After moving there he meets his new neighbor Gatsby whom later on become great friends. Jay Gatsby is a wealthy young man living in a mansion up in West Egg. He is well know for his lavish parties he throws for the wealthiest every weekend. He is know as New money because he didn’t come from a generation of wealth. Daisy Buchanan is Nicks cousin and the women that Gatsby loves. Daisy fell in love with Gatsby and promised she’ll wait for him when he came back. But the feeling of wanting to loved while he was away she fell for a wealthy named Tom. Tom Buchanan come from a family of wealth. Which in the book is describe as “ Old Money.” He believes he can do no wrong . For instance his affair with Myrtle. He saw nothing wrong with his affair, but as soon as he found out that daisy was having an affair he was furious. Very hypocritical, considering his attentions he brought among himself. Myrtle was tom love, but was treat as she was an object more then a person. She’s the type of person that was always looking for ways to better herself. George was Myrtle husband. He owned a rundown auto shop at the edge of the valley ashes. He is also the man who killed Jay Gatsby. My favorite character from the novel is Jay Gatsby. He is my favorite because his type of character came from nothing and transformed himself to something. He build himself up and created an empire. Although people didn’t like him because he was new money, he still was able to succeed in his business work. The plot of the story was when Nick, Jordan, and tom were driving though the valley of ashes and saw that Gatsby car has killed Myrtle. Tom’s mistress. What they didn’t know was that it wasn’t Gatsby driving the car it was daisy. Soon Nick realized it was her driving behind the wheel, but Gatsby was willing to take the fault. What was the ultimate plot twist was when George, Myrtle husband paid a visit to Gatsby. Out of frustration of thinking Gatsby killed his wife he murdered him. Shortly after he shot himself. What most people don’t know if that tom gave the information to George that it was Gatsby car that ran over his wife, implying that Gatsby was behind the wheel. The Setting took place during the 1920’s in New York City on Long island known as two areas the “ West Egg” and the “ East Egg.” It was during the time World War 1 has just ended and alcohol was illegal. This time era was base on people getting drunk and put making there money off of bootleg alcohol. The East Egg is consider to be were all wealthier people live. The East Egg is consider to be known as “ Old Money.” By saying the Eats is old money it means that the people there are coming from generations of wealth and power. Everything has been passed down to one another and will continue to keep their legacy alive. The West Egg is consider new money. Which mean people that didn’t come from generation of wealth. Most people who live on the west are people who worked for their money and build themselves up. The style of writing F. Scott Fitzgerald choose to use was reflection, point of view, symbolism, and imagery. The reader sees the story being told and perceived through Nick Caraway but sometimes we see the point of view being told by another character which makes it third person. Fitzgerald also captures the senses of how things look, smell, sound and feel. One example is “The light grow brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun, and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music, and the opera of voice pitches a key higher” (Fitzgerald) This is a warm description of a party hosted at Gatsby home. Throughout the story Fitzgerald use a bunch of imagery to set the tone and to let the reader get a feel for what is about to happen. Overall I enjoyed reading the book. If I had to rate this book I’d give five stars out of five. This book lets you in on what it was like living during the 1920’s.The only problem I had with the book was the ending. The ending where nobodays shows up to Jay Gatsby funeral. I felt so bad that no one took there time just to pay respect for him. Not even his so called lover daisy paid a visit, neither did all the people that loved attending and showing up to Gatsby parties. In some way I understand why they made the ending that way because it just goes to show no matter how much money you have, money can’t by you loyalty nor respect from others. The ending symbolizing what really happens in real life. Some people that you think are your friends and will be there for you forever end up disappearing and never here from them again. So in that hand I appreciate how the ending has some realist to it.
