This quote is stated by Catherine when she is telling Nick about Daisy's marriage. This passage should be illuminated because it shows how people are willing to tell bizarre lies to seem believable. Nick later stated, “Daisy is not a catholic, and I was a little shocked at the elaborateness of the lie”. Nick knew daisy personally so he caught the lie and was almost offended at it. Nick was captivated in that he found out Tom and Daisy are having a rough marriage. Just like anyone else, Nick asked why they wouldn't separate. Catherine followed what society would do, and lie to a question they didn't know the answer to. To this day there are people like catherine, and if it wasn't for knowledge on daisy, Nick would have a false interpretation as to why they didn't divorce. When catherine told this lie, it side-tracked Nick and it was never mentioned why Daisy and tom didn't divorce.

It's ironic how they make the city seem fascinating by saying it's “a fantastic farm” also they try to shine light on poverty by saying, “where ashes grow like wheat into ridges”. Little did nick know that this was his next destination. Coming from a rich background, Nick is fascinated by this city however, is humbled because of how his father always told him to to respect those who are not rich because it wasn't their fault for the situation they're in.
