The Great Rift Valley is located in Africa. “The northern most extension runs through part of the red sea and at the southern end branches into the Gulf of Aden, where it continues as a part of the Mid-ocean ridge of the Indian Ocean. The main section of the valley of Africa continues from the red sea.” This is what the website “Info Please” says. Then “Planet earth” says, “In eastern Africa the Great Rift Valley separates into two branches, the eastern rift and the western rift. The rift is very deep, and some of the deepest lakes in the world have developed along it. The African great lakes, including Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria, the second largest lake in the world, were formed by the rift.”
The Great Rift Valley was discovered by British explorer John Walter Gregory. Wikipedia says, “The Great Rift Valley is a name given in the late 19th century by British explorer John Walter Gregory to the continuous geographic trough, approximately 6,000 kilometers (3,700mi) in length, which runs from northern Syria in the Southwest Asia to Central Mozambique in East Africa.” The trough is approximately 6,000 kilometers that is big. Imagine walking over a bridge to the other side of the Great Rift Valley. 3,700 miles long is very long.
The boundary type is divergent. Listen to what Jim Z. has to say about it, “It is indeed a divergent boundary. It may become a mid-ocean ridge after the two land masses spread some more.” A divergent boundary is when two land marks move outward. That is what creates oceans. In the future it may just as said turn to a mid-ocean ridge.
There are many volcanoes at the bottom of the Great Rift Valley which breaks the floor. This is what Wikipedia has to say, “The floor is broken by volcanoes, some still active, and contains
