To be sure, no lesson provides an authenticity and durability as that gained through first-hand experience. However, if the world's destiny hinged upon the inevitability of personal experience learned through tangible performance, there would undoubtedly be a continuous recycling of mistakes, misadventures, and catastrophes throughout history. As a result, societal advancement would be limited to the knowledge gained and exercised in a lifetime. Imagine every generation being left to repeat essentially the same process in a perpetual state of affairs. In the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, the protagonist (Bill Murray) had to repeat the same day over again, scores of times, in order to gain enough information to break out of an inexplicable cycle…

There always seems to be a person, who is just plain mean, and picks on everyone in his way. In the book Under the Dome by Stephen King, James Rennie, known as “Junior” is this bully. The song I chose to describe Junior You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch, written by Dr. Seuss. The Grinch and Junior share many common traits, and are both not very friendly people. Junior however, may be a bit more violent than The Grinch, as so far he has been responsible for multiple deaths in the book, including two girls who had “bullied” him in school before the dome days. Many people simply would avoid Junior, other than his friends. People would also avoid the Grinch, as he was quite a nasty person.“I wouldn’t touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!”…

Hannah Kent, in Burial Rites and Billie August in Les Miserables explore a variety of injustices as a product of prejudice by revealing the flaws of their Nineteenth Century social system. Although Kent released her novel in the 21st century, she thoroughly presents Nineteenth Century Iceland in all its formidable culture of prejudice and hardship to the same extent that August explores Nineteenth Century France in Les Miserables. Though both authors propose that one’s preconception of another rests in the position of their social class, August presents that as one’s social class changes, the prejudice changes towards them changes. This is different to Kent as she entices the readers to see the nature of men and their prejudice towards women…

I decided to rewrite the story of “Little Red Riding Hood” because it seemed very fitting in relation to my topic of rape. In the story, Little Red is tricked by a wolf into taking off her red hood that protects her from wolves. She is then attacked by the wolf, and afterwards she runs to the village begging for help. Unfortunately no one will help her; they give the responses countless give to victims of sexual assault, and so Little Red cries. Then a hunter decides to help her and teaches her how to defend herself, they kill the wolf and Little Red is never a victim again. However, unlike this story, most rape victims never receive a happy ending, and never receive justice.…

Lincoln is a movie based off of Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin, which portrays the latter end of Abraham Lincoln’s illustrious career. The film is based around Congressional debate and Lincoln’s attempts to pass the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery in the United States. The movie is centered in Washington D.C. and the areas surrounding it between the Emancipation Proclamation in January, 1863, and the death of Lincoln in April, 1865. The film raises the issues of slavery, ending the Civil War, political strife, familial strife and general morality. Lincoln, being a Hollywood film, was meant to entertain the viewers. However, the movie sticks so close to reality that the movie is not as entertaining, rather more informative. The major themes of the film all…

The movie of the Schindler’s List is accurate to the novel there were fifteen minor changes. Most things are shown in the movie differently have strong reasons for showing it their way. The first inaccuracy I saw was the first meeting between Schindler and Pfefferberg is in a church, during the priests preaching. While according to the book Schindler visited Pfefferberg at his mother’s house, where Schindler almost gets killed by Pfefferberg, because he thought Schindler was an SS man that wanted to do her harm or wanted to arrest himself since he was a fugitive at that moment. (Kenneally, 1982: 49-52) The second was the progression of Schindler employing Jews. According to the movie, Schindler starts with hiring Jews instead of Polish because they are cheaper. Nevertheless, according to the book though Schindler started with hiring Polish workers and Stern was the one that brought Jews inn slowly. (Kenneally, 1982: 72). In the movie, the question if Emilie should join Oskar in Krakow was asked when she visited him in Krakow. Corresponding to the book, this question has not been asked until Oskar visited Emilie in their hometown (Kenneally, 1982: 94). These events are probably because of…
