The parallels between The Epic of Gilgamesh, translated by Benjamin R. Foster, and the Genesis stories, from The Hebrew Bible, are uncanny. The overall theme of these stories talks about divine intervention and questions the human condition of mortality. Both of these infamous literary works address the fact that humans are the only known species capable of abstract thinking, moral judgment, and meta-cognition. While continuous belief compares this ability with the divine, the human life is limited whereas the supernatural is not. Theodore Hiebert raises this same awareness in “The Eden Narrative: A Literary and Religio-historical Study of Genesis 2-3” by saying, “wisdom and immortality are a stable pair in the ancient Near East, and that they are used both in Mesopotamian myths and in Genesis to explain the human condition and to mark the line between human and divine” (p. 2). The literal and metaphoric resemblances will force critical readers to wonder if the antecedent Gilgamesh story influenced the stories in Genesis.…

The main supernatural being was known as the Great Spirit, who was responsible for the creation of human beings, plants, animals, and the forces of good in nature. They believed that the Great Spirit influenced the lives of many people and indirectly guided their decisions. Aside from the main Great Spirit, other important deities included the Thunderer, Three Sisters, and the spirits of Maize, Beans, and Squash, who were said to specialize in specific prayer requests. If there were any conflicts with The Great Spirit, they believed that diseases and other misfortunes were the results and visible consequences of the disputes. According to the Iroquois, Communication with the Great Spirit could not be done directly by an ordinary human. However, through burning tabbaco, they believed that “the smoke carried their messages skyward to the creator” (http://elearning.la.psu.edu/anth/146/lesson-5/lesson-page-2). Another aspect of their religion was their reliance on dreams. “Dreams were regarded as supernatural messages that had to be addressed for continued health” (http://elearning.la.psu.edu/anth/146/lesson-5/lesson-page-2). The Iroquois regarded dreams as very important signs, and a lot of attention was given to interpreting dreams. At festivals, many people enjoyed participating in the activity of dream guessing to show the value they placed on…

There are many stories that talk about the creation of the earth and have been passed from generation to generation. However, each culture and each region has its own stories about the creation. They are unique in some way but still share the same themes that are universal to many civilizations. Almost all the themes talk about how we and everything on earth were created or how the universe and humanity developed. Two of the most popular creation stories are the Book of Genesis and the Popol Vuh. While the Genesis and Popol Vuh are different in the way God created living things and their explanation of creation, their similarities are important because they tell us how everything come from and the people’s belief in Gods.…

I was born today. My bones quarried at Rano Raraku near the northeast end of my homeland, Easter Island. My makers were small, with deep tawny skin that gleamed with moisture under the sun as they carved the gentle curves of my body. As I lay among the rock, an unmoving piece of stone that stretched across the land to the creatures that constructed me, I observed the thriving life around me. I was surrounded by trees, some whose unbranched bodies shot into the vibrant sky, their silky, lively leaves dancing in the warm wind that swept over me. Down at my laying level, grew a variety of small, round, leafy, thin, and sweet smelling plants, sprouting from the land like gifts sent from the fertile soil. From the moment at which I was carved from the earth, I was in awe of its beauty, which provided myself and the creatures around me with so much, taking nothing in return. My observations were interrupted as I felt my body lurch forward, and slide onto what I felt to be the dancing trees I had once perceived around me. Hundreds of the small creatures stood around me, noise exchanging between them moving quickly and frequently from their lips, disturbing the peaceful silence. We slowly moved forward, my body still shuddering over the slippery dead trees beneath me. I felt as if I could hear them whimpering. As we proceeded, I was overwhelmed by the exotic life that moved by me. Colors swirling through the air, growing from trees high and low, with branches sturdy and fragile, trunks thick and thin. Smells overwhelmed my buzzing senses; sweet, spicy, musky, sharp, eye watering. I watched the creatures as we passed these aromatic plants; rip brightly colored fruits from their branches—killing them without even a thought. We continued to march forward. The vibrant sky above me began to darken, and our pace slowed as we reached our seemingly final destination. Although I could not see through the darkness, I could still feel and hear. Something long…

Enkidu was formed from clay and saliva by Aruru, the goddess of creation, to tame Giglamesh and rid him of his arrogance. Enkidu transforms from the nature of an animal to that of a human and at the end, he dies. This portrays the natural life cycle of mankind, which is that of birth and death. Furthermore, this natural cycle relates back to Enkidu’s creation in the natural world. Gilgamesh is afraid after Enkidu’s death, which makes him question his own mortality. The final fate of all mankind that is death, becomes the main hurdle for Gilgamesh to conquer. Gilgamesh who is two-thirds divine, stands in the center of mortality and immortality. According to Gilgamesh, the power of immortality belonged to women for the sole reason that they are able to give birth. Gilgamesh starts out his journey to attain immortality at the mountain Mashu where he encounters the Scorpion-men, guardians of boundary between earth and sky, who tell him “It is impossible Gilgamesh, Nobody has passed through the mountain’s inaccessible tract.” (Epic of Gilgamesh 140) Gilgamesh is upset since he is asked to leave, no human can make pass…
