any time soon), make sure that is offers daycare of some sort, gets manage familiar with your situation, etc. These tips were the most useful techniques that could be used to ensure that a father can have a work/family balance.
After distinguishing between which tips I thought would be the most useful, I continued to read and analyze the text. I plan to use the tips from this article as claims for my casual argument. The techniques would be labeled as “other options” for men rather than just staying home with family. They will also support my claim that men should have a career regardless if the woman of the house has one too. This will give them equal chances at working and caring for the children at home.
Tucker, Patrick. "Stay-at-Home Dads." Futurist 39.5. 2005. 12-3. Web. Author Patrick Tucker created an article on Stay-at-Home Dads for the demography section of The Futurist, a web article series created by the World’s Future Society website.
In this article, he compares and contrasts men and women’s relationship with their children whether they are in or out of the workforce. He also discusses the traditions gender roles of parents in the workforce and how it has changed in the recent years. Tucker also provides statistics and facts relating to a recent study conducted by Robert Frank, a professor of child development at Oakton Community College in Illinois and the U.S Census Bureau. These two sources provided Tucker with information about how men and women compare and differ in the workforce and …show more content…
family. I plan to use information and mainly statistics from the article to add additional information relating to my casual argument to my casual argument.
One statistic that I want to use in my argument is the there are less than 100,000 stay at home dads in the United States. This will contribute to the fact that more men are focusing on family more than careers in recent times. This will also give the reader an estimated number of how many stay at home dads there are in the United States. I also plan to use the fact that stay-at-home dads have more-lasting bonds with children than working dads. This fact will be a positive effect of men taking on the role of the stay-at-home parent.
Bleske-Rechek, April, et al. "Men and Women, Work and Family: A Test of Competing Perspectives." Journal of Social, Evolutionary, and Cultural Psychology 5.4. 2011. 275-92.
Web. Authors April Bleske-Rechek, Eric A. Fuerstenberg, Heather D. Harris, and Danielle E. Ryan, all of of the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, conducted an article titled “Men and Women, Work and Family: A Test of Competing Perspectives” to analyze and explain the work family conflict and how it is created. According to this article, men and women who struggle to balance family and work life create the work-family conflict. The work-family conflict is an inabililty to balance out career life and family life. The authors describe the way this conflict affects men and women and children who don’t cause any hardship in this scenario. The authors also discuss how men and women play different roles in the workforce and how they affect the way these parents spend their time. After reading the essay thoroughly, I found a few good points that could be used to support my research question and fact. At the beginning of the article, there were facts from the U.S Department of Commerce. According to the U.S Department of Commerce, in the U.S, women’s involvement in the workforce has increased. This fact contributes to why more men are staying home and more women are holding big jobs. I will use this in my essay to contribute to how men are capable of being stay at home dads and the positive effects of women having the job as primary caretaker.
Bryan, Derrick M. "To Parent Or Provide? The Effect of the Provider Role on Low-Income Men 's Decisions about Fatherhood and Paternal Engagement." Fathering: A Journal of Theory, Research, & Practice about Men as Fathers 11.1. 2013. 71-89. Web. To Parent or Provide is an article composed by author Derrick Bryan Ph.D. In this article Bryan discusses how fathers interact and invest in their children. He also discusses how the expectations of the parenting role get complicated when it comes to focusing on and managing careers and occupations. Many parents have problems devoting their time in equal increments to their families and jobs. Bryan furthers the issue and discusses how the roles of men and women in family changed over time. He talks about how men began to take on the role as caregiver and women began to take on the role as provider. Sometimes the man can have a job and still be devoted to taking care of the basics at home. In this article I found a few facts and points of thought that I felt would be good to put in my casual argument. According to author Derrick Bryan, the cultural expectations of men and women have changed. This relates to the prior annotation. As I mentioned early, the gender roles of parents have shifted a bit but not completely. According to Bryan, women and men both hold jobs in a given household and the family benefits with the mother’s additional income. There are certain effects that can happen when the man is the caregiven. Bryan states the he could suffer from judgement and criticism that could cause him to seem less of a man. I plan to use this in my essay as one of the effects of a man being a stay at home dad.
Flood, Sarah. "Success and Sacrifice: Careers and Gendered Family Lives." Conference Papers -- American Sociological Association. 2009. 1. Web. Sarah M. Flood, of the Department of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, composed the essay about men and women and gender roles and differences. In the essay, she discussed the work-family conflict and how women compare to men in the workforce. Within her discussions, she made it clear that men and women gender roles are very important in them being successful. She also discussed how there are differences in pay and opportunity in the workforce, and how women are more likely to receive similar or more pay in comparison to their male counterparts. There were a few good points made by Flood and some were comparable to my casual argument topic. Upon reading Flood’s article of success and sacrifice, I came across a few good solid points that contribute to my research question. There were statements stating that men are expected to earn wages to maintain stableness in the home. This statement opposes my research fact that more men are being committed to family rather than career. I could use this statement as information on the history of male dominance in the workforce and explain that traditions of that sort are currently being distorted.
Voorpostel, Marieke, der Lippe van, and Jonathan Gershuny. "Spending Time Together- Changes Over Four Decades in Leisure Time Spent with a Spouse." Journal of Leisure Research 42.2 .2010. 243-65. Web. Authors Marieke Voorpostel ,of Swiss Centre of Expertise in the Social Sciences, Tanja van der Lippe ,of Utrecht University, and Jonathan Gershuny, University of Oxford, composed this study to measure the how much time married couples were spending with each other aside from working. In this study, they compared surveys and measured the percentage of men and women who chose to go after goals rather than spend time with family. This study provides a lot of information pertaining to how men and women try to maintain individuality while being in relationships and offering their time to other things such as work, family, household chores, and socializing with others. As I was reading this article, I found good facts that I can use to add extra information to my paper.
