You have to find the balance for yourself because the job wants all your time just like your family do. When I was employed I would try to find out different family activities in advance so I could request off, but if an emergency occurs I would have to call in, and that only hurt me because every time you call out you receive a point. But when I was employed I would perform to my best ability having the Galatea effect. But after being employed for different temporary services and not feeling valued eventually gives you the Golem effect, which is a loss in performance because someone in a higher position might not see the value in the individual.
