The Historical Notes on The Handmaid’s Tale is part of a transcript from the Twelfth Symposium on Gileadean Studies. This occurs in the year of 2195 and two people speak. The people who speak are Professor Moon and Professor Pieixoto. Professor Moon speaks about the events of the symposium she also talks about the historical moments that would have occurred after the Handmaid’s story. She introduces Professor Pieixoto who speaks about The Handmaid’s Tale. His talk is an academic discussion, named the Problems of Authentication in Reference to The Handmaid’s Tale.

How does the Historical Notes comment on the hope that things improve? What does it say to you as a person?
Professor Pieixoto speaks about how we should be cautious about passing moral judgment based upon the people of Gilead. This shows that there is a hope that things will improve. He explains that the society of Gilead was under a great deal or pressure and was facing many different things in which we now as a society no longer have to worry about. As a person it says to me that we have to have compassion for the people of Gilead because we can not fully understand what they experienced.

The point of view of the novel is written in first person. We know this because it is told from Offred’s point of view. Offred tells the story in the present but she shifts to flashbacks of life before Gilead. The first person narrator allows for the reader to see the story from a single person’s perspective. This allows the audience of the novel to understand how the world is around them. This is very important because this book is apart of dystopian literature, which creates a whole new world for us as
