Certainly, such expectations have to be addressed by the film, if it is to be considered satisfying for the audience, and in this way, elements within the film, such as character representations, the narrative and cinematography are all important components which allow this to be achieved. Additionally, the social and political context in which the film is being viewed must be considered, as it is against this background that their expectations will have been formed.…

In this essay I will analyse and compare the impact and effectiveness of two promotional methods by one film: Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko is a relatively low-budget sci-fi drama which is considered a cult-classic by many critics and was co-produced by Pandora Cinema and Flower Films. It stars a relatively young, and then unknown, Jake Gyllenhaal – and documents his difficult adolescence and significant love interest with co-star Jena Malone. I will be exploring the key media conventions of the film’s promotional material with particular focus on the representation of specific social groups and using media theorists and philosophers to analyse the…

People are surrounded by media through music, magazines, billboards, advertisements, as well as technology such as; television, radio, internet, and cell phone use (Maasik, S.& Solomon, J.,2015). Therefore, the messages that are delivered through these outlets become a major influence in the lives of both men and women. The film trailer acknowledges the power media has on what and how people should feel; as well as the way, they view themselves and others. The messages are delivered through clips of previous interviews, news headlines and videos of erotic dance moves. Also, the images and interviews delivered by common people not actors particularly high school students deliver a negative portrayal of how mass media negatively influences young girls and women.…

The impact of West Indian slavery on the cultural landscape of the Caribbean cannot be under estimated or taken for granted. In the entire discourse on West Indian slavery, it is often taken for granted that the discussion centers solely on enslaved Africans. However, slavery brought to the region not only African but Europeans (Spaniards, French and British) and consequent to its abolition, there was the advent of the east Indians. We see the impact of their influence in the names of places; the foods we eat; our music and dance; our arts and craft, gender and sexuality. As these and other anecdotal evidences are examined and the academic contributions of others are analysed, Caribbean culture will be clearly defined and its origin established. Slavery and its attending impact upon Caribbean culture have been both positive and negative as remnants of the social/class system of the “plantocracy” linger and take deeper root in the Caribbean community, in general and the Jamaican landscape, in particular.…
