The Heart of Downtown Toronto
Where would you go in Toronto to see a free outdoor concert or festival? Yonge-Dundas Square also known as YD square is located right across from Eaton Centre Shopping Mall at Yonge and Dundas. YD Square was previously called Wilton street. The place has been historically known as the Centre of a Community as well. Upon the approval of Toronto City Council, YD Square project was started in 1998. The project was jointly involved with not only the City of Toronto, but also the downtown Yonge street businesses and resident associations. Then, the construction of the new YD squares was completed in 2003, and the first public-private partnership called the board of management for YD Square was established to manage the public square in Canada. Because Yonge-Dundas Square, outdoor piazza, promotes plenty of free events and entertainment to bring people together in the heart of downtown Toronto, the community should develop strategic plans for public safety and seasonality.
According to Broek, the author of “location matters” indicates that YD square is very attractive in terms of location. Yonge and Dundas is also one of busiest intersection. The advantages of YD Square are its location, accessibility, and outdoor event space. It is located in the central part of the downtown Toronto community. It is a public piazza and easily accessible by public transportation. Besides, the place is wide-open space so people with limited mobility can easily access to the piazza. As I look at the square across from the street, a huge L.E.D. screen is installed in the left side of the YD Square close to the entrance of Dundas subway. Info booth is close to the subway entrance as well. Two rows of lighted fountains are in the centre of the YD Square. A big stage is also behind the fountains, and small trees are on the right side. Few booths are set up for the day, and it seems that many people stop by comfortably to see what the booths are about. I see a group of young people gather at

Thomas Sugrue, author of The Origins of the Urban Crisis, said that Detroit’s comeback depends on whether the city can improve the lives of working class African Americans and I couldn’t agree more. With the gentrification of downtown and midtown Detroit showing many recent successes for those in its realm, it still isn’t providing benefits for the majority of its surrounding residents which are predominately African American. In the neighborhoods outside the downtown area, the physical environments are still deteriorating with high unemployment rates and widespread poverty. There is little evidence that…

The motivations for the Chinese to come to the United States are similar to most immigrants. These motivations are what most people call "The American Dream." These could be looking for a better life, having a better job, running away from political issues. However, for Chinese these American dreams were not too easy to achieve at first compared to other immigrants. Chinese suffered a lot more obstacles and discriminations because they are relatively small and easy to be targeted on. Even more the legal system passed a law in 1963 forbidding Chinese to testify against white men in court. This anti-Chinese action was most critical in the Pacific Coast; as a result, it caused the dispersion of Chinese that had settled in California to the mid-western and eastern states.(Chicago-Chinatown, 1996)1…

    Midaq Alley

The theme of "Midaq Alley" cuts to the heart of Arab society. Namely, it shows how a group of characters living in the same slum neighborhood responds to the combined promise and threat of Western-influenced modernization. Midaq Alley is about the Egyptian residents of a hustling, packed back alley in Cairo in the 1940's. The attempts of several residents to escape the alley and move up in status end with dreams broken and unfulfilled. The opening sentences of "Midaq Alley" points to a world bypassed by history: "Many things combine to show that Midaq Alley is one of the gems of times gone by and that it once shone forth like a flashing star in the history of Cairo. Which Cairo do I mean? That of the Fatimids, the Mamlukes or the Sultans?" (Mahfouz 1). The book captures a great slice of life in the Cairo of the first half of this century. The novel does not describes the city, but in offers an insight into its culture, and into the profound social changes that took place during the 20th century.…
