Examples of Martha’s Character
What was Martha's attitude and character to Sarah and why was she so cold and hard to her? In The Heretic's Daughter, Andrew get smallpox and is close to death. Also Martha, Sarah's mom is killed during the witch trials because she wants to put an end to them. Sarah's mother is hanged for being "witch of Andover". Martha, for example can be defiant, mentally strong, and she has a loving side toward Sarah.
Martha sometimes can be stubborn and defiant. In one of her quotes from chapter 1 she says “I’d rather eat stones” (Chapter 1 p.12). In this quote she is trying to say that she would rather hurt herself then go to mass. I feel that she doesn’t take her weekly obligation seriously or she really just doesn’t care. The grandmother on the other hand is religious and goes every weekend. In fact she is great friends with the priest, Reverend Dane. I think that this is one of the reasons why she is accused of being a witch. Martha can also carry an attitude and I will discuss in the next paragraph.
Sarah’s mother sometimes can also be filled with an attitude and a temper. An example of that was at the grandmother funeral and the priest said something kind. Martha said “And does not first Peter say rid yourselves of hypocrisy, envy, and slauder lest it bring it ruin the defiler?” (Chapter 3 p. 42). I feel like she had an attitude with him and she tried to test the priest to see if he really knows is faith. Also I think that she was also angry with God to take the grandmother away from their family. You can’t blame Martha for being sad because aren’t we all sad when somebody that we love passes.
The final quote that Martha says comes in the fourth chapter when she stays mentally and physically calm when she finds Sarah in the barn. She says “God’s apron, Sarah, will you smoke us all out” (chapter 4 p.59). I think that she isn’t yelling at Sarah even though you can till
