Have you ever thought about the history of baseball and how the game got started? Well, I have because it is my favorite sport. It is also the favorite sport of millions of people around the world. Who invented baseball is a little complicated. People have always thought it to be Abner Doubleday but come to find out, it was probably a guy by the name of Alexander Cartwright. It was based on the game called Rounders. Rounders was a game that came to America with immigrants from England, and Ireland. You played with three bases and the first team to twenty one won the game. The first baseball game was played by the ball club called the Knickerbockers.
The first league was formed in 1858 and it was called the National Association of Baseball Player, the (NABBP). They played under the Knickerbockers Rules. These rules limited the outfielders to three, and you tagged the runner instead of throwing the ball at him.
The NABBP set up a series of games between All Stars from Brooklyn and New York Many fans came to watch and they all figured out that baseball could make them all a lot of money.
In 1867 The Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first team to be semi pro and paid its players a salary. The dominated baseball for several years, and then in 1871, nine teams formed under the NABBP and player each other. This later became the National League. The National League brought respectability to the game of baseball by putting limits on the amount of money players could make, not allowing them to play on more than one team at a time and not allowing gambling on the game. Later another league formed called the American league. These two leagues decided to play their own championships and then play each other in a World Series.
In 1921 eight White Sox players were tried on charges of accepting money to loose the World Series. It was a lot of money, $100,000. It became known as the Black Sox scandal. After this time
