Race Riots In Chicago
Chicago started to form into the city we now know it as today.

1903 Iroquois Theater Fire happend.

In 1908 the Garfield Park Conservatory opened.

1909 saw saw Grant Park opened as "Forever Open, Clear and Free."

Comiskey Park opened a year later in 1910 which would be the home for the Chicago White Sox for many years to come.

1914 saw Wrigley Field open and the Chicago Cubs still play there today.

1917 and 1919 the Chicago White Sox won the World Series and two years later it was followed with the Black Sox scandal that led to many players being banned perminatly from playing professional baseball.

1919 also started the Race Riots in Chicago.

1925 had the opening of Solider Field where the Chicago Bears would now start to play after

    So what the White Sox did were they started playing they tried to win and the came back but the cincinnati red were still up 5-4.     As prior stated, the Chicago World’s Fair took place only 22 years after the Chicago Fire and showed that Chicago was quickly growing industrially as well as population wise (Rydell 1). Chicago was in competition with New York City, Washington, D.C., and St. Louis for housing the fair, which would lead to great prestige for the city (Rydell 1). Congress decided in 1890 that Chicago would be the lucky city to hold the fair, giving Chicago three years for preparations for the extravagant and monumental event (Rydell 1). As Ben C. Truman described in The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 the fair was designed to show the progress made by American’s since Columbus’s arrival (Truman 1). With this fair taking place in Chicago, the city was able to show its progress, especially after the destruction from the Chicago fire. Daniel H. Burnham was put in charge of the exposition and had help from his partner John W. Root to select and achieve beautiful architecture and sculpture to create an artistic and magnificent fair, which would become known as the White City (Rydell 1). Author of Devil in the White City Erik Larson describes Root’s untimely and sudden death in 1891 and how it shocked Chicago as well as caused commotion and gossip (Larson 107-8).     I chose Cartoon 8, and I think that the cartoonist’s message is referring back to Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech that he called to end racism in the United States. In the cartoon, there is a police officer that is shooting a MLK statue that reads “I HAVE A DREAM”. In the Ferguson case, there are claims that indictment that the white police officer that shot the black male citizen was because the male was black, so that was why the police officer walked out free. The cartoon shows that America is doing the complete opposite of what MLK dreamed of. MLK dreamed of being a country of everyone being equal, no matter if you were black or white. In the Ferguson Crisis, it’s almost hurting to see that these types of things get so out of hand with racism. That was not what MLK fought for in the American Civil Rights Movement. I think that the intended audience is those who were activists in civil rights so that they could see how naïve some people have turned because of this Ferguson case. I do agree with the intended audience because it letting those people see what has been happening in the country but I also can disagree because maybe those people are too shocked to even want to know what the country has turned into.…
