English Language is one of the oldest Languages in the world. To become what it is today it has been through a series of changes in the course of history.
English is commonly divided into three main periods; Old English, middle English and modern. All of these periods have been characterized by different influences which have made English a rich and complex language.
Old English was the first period of English in which English started to acquire the characteristic that will remain over history “mixing”. From this period on English was a language that was mixed with different languages, particularly those from Saxons, Angles, and Jutes. Moreover, there were some other cultures that influenced the language spoken on the old England. Romans Danes and Norsemen also influenced the English language.
The second period of English language was Middle English, during this period the English language suffered the biggest transformation in history. The Norman invasion provoked a big changed on English language since this introduced thousands of new words and kept English underground as a vulgar tongue. In this period English was only spoken, but instead of dying English acquire French words becoming a much richer language.
The last period is called modern English is what we know as English today. This period started with the printing press this machine helped English to remain written but it also helped to an important process that help every society to grow this is alphabetization, which means that many people had access to books and consequently many English speakers learned how to read.
