Elements of the blues are rooted in African culture. The blues is one of the most influential styles of music, especially music of the early twentieth century. During its peak, the blues seemed to take on the role as the voice of the black population. Artist like Ma Rainey, Robert Johnson, and others alike were some of the great blues musicians. Although each artist sings about something different, they implant an emotion as well as spread the tribulations expressed in the song.…
In today’s society the African American community still dominates the music industry with song and dance. The blues music has gone through a massive evolution since it first started out as a musical tradition for the African Americans and their slave culture. Since then we have seen many important improvements and milestones for when it comes to human rights and black music. The end of slave import and the end of segregation lead to black music in the radio among others. It became possible to record and possess music by African Americans with help from record labels like Okeh Records and Paramount Records, great artists like Son House, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters had massive success, and in the late 1940s we even had a black man owning a radio station. After that the blues had a bit of a quiet period before we…
Growing up in the 1980’s and the 90’s I became a huge fan of Hip-Hop music. My friends and I used to sit around for hours listening to our favorite rappers on the radio and watching the videos on television. We would argue for hours about who was a better lyricist and why. Now as I have grown older and the music I have grown to love and still listen to has changed, I find myself asking a very good question. What has changed in Hip-Hop from the time I was started listening to now? The answer is as complex as it is simple, the music itself has changed. The Hip-Hop music of today seems to be more commercial as opposed to being artistic and message driven.…
It gave way for some African American and creole artists to make successful careers, integrating many cultures through this music, while also managing to further perpetuate…
Jazz is one of the musical genres that represent America. It had a combination of influences from Africa and Europe. When Africans were brought to the United States as slaves, they brought their music and culture with them. Samuel A. Floyd Jr. stated “…particular musical tendencies were brought with Africans to the New World…and spread throughout African-derived populations in the United States, eventually becoming an integral part of the music we know as jazz.” African slaves used musical expression for social purpose in the 1800s; they sang songs when they are working or they played drums. The immigration of Europeans started in the seventeenth century. They brought the instrumentations, the tonality, the chords, and the form into the United…
is pertinent to the goal. The Ice-T directed film, “Something From Nothing”, explores the perspectives and personalities of both present-day and early hip-hop pioneers. Ice-T gained, much deserved, respect when the film was accepted into the Sundance Film Festival. In the documentary, release in the summer of 2012, Ice-T shows the birth of hip-hip by literally starting at the place that is credited with the dawn of hip-hop music, New York City. As the film goes on, Ice-T and his film crew make their way through all the major sites in hip-hip culture, such as Detroit, Los Angles, Compton, and Long Beach, California. The entire film is made up of interviews that are filmed on a location that is relevant to the artist, whether it be in their home, studio or a place that is integral to hip-hop. One notable question that Ice-T asks every artist is, “What advice would you give to an aspiring rapper or hip-hop artist?” The answers to this question vary greatly, observing the responses shows the theme of Ice-T’s message. Hip-hop as a culture is very diverse and rap as a musical art form is also very diverse in the sense that it means different things to different people.…
African American slaves didn’t have much to bring along with them coming into a new country, they had very little family as they were all separated and divided into different plantations. What they did bring with them was their musical traditions. Many people would refer to their type of music as slave songs, gospel music or spiritual music. Spiritual music had a variety of moods. “The slaves sang for many reasons. A song might be a lullaby, a work song, a mournful complaint, or a tune sung simply for pleasure” (Woog 13). After all the deaths that were taken place in the south, it was a doleful measure for the slaves on the plantation and this gave them a way to let out all their sorrows, these songs had great meanings to them, sometimes their songs even had hidden messages in them. “One song called "Wade in the Water" instructed escaping slaves to walk in the rivers and streams so that the water would wash away their smell and the master's hounds wouldn't be able to track…
The older versions of black music is better than the modern day black music. The first Africans transported to this country came from a variety of ethnic groups with a long history of distinct and cultivated musical traditions. African Americans used homemade drums and banjos to communicate among themselves. In fact, back the 1700s, drums had been banned on many slave plantations. Slaves on southern plantations had their own musical styles, which later evolved into gospel, blues, and what is now known as bluegrass, or country music.…

I listen to music every day of my life. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep. My current mood determines what type of music I listen to. Being influenced by American hip hop is one thing but the Korean Hip hop scene has not only copied but completely changed the meaning of the word hip hop by over exaterationg and glamorising it with flashy lyrics and music videos. It is suggested that forgeries can never understand the true meaning or understudying of hip-hop history. They believe the genre is strongly connected to the African-American culture and history and know what it means to be classified as “black” or African American but they don’t understand the struggles and hardship of what it means to be African American.…
