The Holocaust: The Night Of Broken Glass

The Holocaust was the end of the long process which included terror and propaganda, known as Anti-Semitism. When the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, they imposed the Nuremberg Laws (“How and Why Did the Holocaust Happen?”), forcing Jews to wear yellow stars on all of their clothing so they could be easily identified, and stripped the Jews of all their basic human rights. On the Night of Broken Glass, the Nazis organized violent attacks on the Jews. This night was named the Night of Broken Glass because of all the glass from houses and shops that were littered all over the streets of Germany. Nazis and Nazi supporters used Jews as scapegoats for all their economic problems, not considering how the United States of America was also trapped
Once Hitler gained the trust of the Germans by spreading his ideas of German supremacy and the creation of a pure Aryan race, he began the Holocaust. “Holocaust” derives from a Greek word meaning “sacrifice by fire.” During the Holocaust, 6 million Jews were persecuted and murdered (“Introduction to the Holocaust”), with approval from the Nazi state, because they were considered racially inferior than the Germans and were said to be the main reason for the Germans’ economic problems after World War I. The Holocaust also persecuted other groups like the Gypsies, disabled, and homosexuals, or people whose behaviors didn’t match the social norms, but the Jews were the largest victimized group. The National Socialist government in the beginning of the Nazi regime established concentration camps to imprison opponents of the state, but in the years before the beginning of World War II, Jews and other mentioned groups were incarcerated in these concentration camps because of ethnic, racial, and religious
