Tone is the attitude and portrayal of the author’s words forming the story. D.H. Lawrence’s tone for this short story is serious. Throughout the story nothing truly cheerful actually happens. The plot mainly focuses on two things, Maybel trying to kill herself and the unlikely pair’s seemingly forced relationship. It almost seems as if the weather where the story takes place reflects the tone of the overall story: gloomy, grey, and cold. Even without searching, things can turn out, or happen, in unexpected ways is the theme for the short story. This theme, or message the author is trying to get across, makes since because Dr. Fergusson and Maybel were pretty much strangers, aside from occasionally seeing each other when Fergusson was over conversing with her brothers, that fell in love and were making plans to be married within a couple of hours. Lawrence is a mystifying and unexpected love story that can be understood through the character’s emotions, the plot, and the theme and tone of the story, and it takes place in the early 1920’s in a small English town. The character’s emotions and thoughts play a major role in this short story. Without their thoughts and emotions being shown in the story, the reader would not have any way of knowing that Dr. Fergusson does not instantly love Maybel, but he is actually disgusted by her at first. They also would not know about Maybel’s thoughts, or her depression, and would not know why she tried to kill herself. Without knowing the character’s thoughts and emotions the storyline, and plot, would be different making the story turn out completely different. The theme and tone of the story also work with the character’s emotions. The tone of the story is serious and dreary coinciding with the weather and Maybel’s depression, and the theme is that even without searching, things can turn out, or happen, in unexpected ways. This makes sense with the story because Maybel and Dr. Fergusson were not specifically looking for each other, or anyone, to fall in love with. This is not a normal, classic love story and should be analyzed carefully in order to fully comprehend.
