The House On Mango Street, this is a book with drama, action, sorrow, and some happiness. The book by Sandra Cisnero,. has a lot to do with being a Mexican American. Now I do not know what it's like to be a Mexican American and how back in this time period they were treated, but how the explains not the best.
In the vignette, “A Rice Sandwich”(Ch.18), I have chosen is the experience of shame. Because I can relate to this most of all can say they have felt some kind of shame. So Esperanza will tend to explain how she felt shameful of her differences to the other kids. A big thing I noticed she felt shame was what happened with the lunches. Everybody had their lunch at the canteen. Esperanza wanted to have her lunch there. Her mom finally wrote her a note saying she would pack her a lunch so she can eat the canteen. …show more content…
Well the school denied letting her eat at the canteen and she was forced to go home and eat there.
The reason they said she lived too close to school so she needed to go home to eat. They directed her home and pointed to the boarded up houses and ghetto type street. Esperanza felt shame full of where she had lived and that she must go home to have lunch without being able to hang out with the other children.
For my next quote of shame in the book The House On Mango Street I have chosen is “A Red House” Esperanza is very much shameful for her sad red house. She lives in not the greatest area in a red house she believes is sad. She won't even tell people that she lives in the red house on 4006 Mango Street. She is very shameful of this house and its location.
The reason I think she is very shameful of this house and where the location is it not where she feels safe and would like to be. Also Esperanza very much so just wants to fit in. She tries very hard to fit in. Her whole deal is, she wants to fit in perfectly with no flaws. She pretty much ashamed of her whole entire
life.
So after reading this book I have learned alot This book has a lot to do with shame. I talked about in this paper, poverty, and wanting wealth and a better life. This book has showed me that I definitely have it better then some people and I really appreciate what I have. The reason I chose shame is that it is a huge part of this book. This book isn’t the happiest but you definitely learn things from a different standpoint.
