Gender roles are constantly changing, but there is not enough progress in the gender identity chosen by society for women. A woman being depicted in the media as weak or lesser than a man is not tolerable. Just because these femininity performances have been repeated for so long in history does not make it natural that women should act and be represented in that way. (Alberts, 2007) It is the twenty-first century and women should be considered strong, independent and equal to men. It is completely unacceptable that women have to go through this because men think they can have power over women. In addition to this the idea that if a woman is incapacitated, she is willing to partake in this type of event. Certain rape cases in the documentary involved alcohol. In the reading about binge drinking Engstrom (2012) states, “According to Sterba (1998), ‘‘almost 50% of male college students say they would commit rape if they were certain that they would get away with it’’ (p. 294). Statistics suggest that alcohol is frequently a factor, for example, in cases of sexual assault on college campuses (Abbey, 1991), but not always when the perpetrator has been drinking.” This quotation form Engstrom shows how skewed the ideology that men have power over women and that men believe it to be justified because they are masculine. Institutions cover-up these incidents furthermore allow the criminal face little to no consequences for their actions.
