An Outlier is someone who stands apart from others in his or her group or profession by acting differently than others, and because of this they are successful. According to Gladwell, most people are incapable of becoming successful; Gladwell says this is because of the radically simple fact that some do not get the same chances and opportunities as others. It has more to do with a person’s fate than their intelligence in his or her field. The general idea of a population is that if a person puts enough time and hard work into something then there is no end to the possibilities to come. The global belief, with the exception of Malcolm Gladwell and his followers, believe that anybody can become successful and everyone has the same opportunity to do the same. This easily acceptable and arguably accurate idea is simply not true. Malcolm Gladwell, author of the popular and mind-altering novel Outliers, thinks otherwise.…

What other factor(s) does Gladwell not account for that contribute to success? Gladwell claims that opportunities allow individuals to be successful. However, he does not account the fact that the opportunities are meaningless if they choose not to take advantage of them. Over my four-month summer break my goal was to get my hands on as many books as possible. One of the books that I came across was called “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell. After reading this book on my flight to Asia I fell in love with the book and admired the author. His writing was organized in a way where it was easy to comprehend and he was able to support his evidence with research and statistics. Although there are a lot of scholarly terms that is used to support his study, he uses a more simplified language to make these terms more understandable and later backs up his simple language with intellectual evidence. Moreover, his books are structured in a way where each scientific study is systematized in a specific order so that he can use the aforementioned example to…

“...If you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desires.” In the book 'outliers' by Malcolm Gladwell, Gladwell States that there is no such thing as a self made person. That if you succeed in life it depends on who you are and where you came from. I disagree with this statement for the reason that, although this may be occasionally correct, mostly it isn’t true . There are many people who have created success for themselves and are famous now. Such as Jim Carrey and Tyler Perry.…

"And that opportunity played a critical role in their success" (30 Gladwell). Many times, people will argue that if you want something, you can achieve it simply through hard work; however, that is not always the case. In Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, he explains the significant amount of opportunities that successful people are given. Gladwell uses the example of Joe Flom to explain how timing is a huge factor in success. Early in his career, he was declined by a huge law firm, and had to settle for a firm that was just starting out. Even though this seems like a disadvantage, it turned into an opportunity because the new law firm turned out to grow into one of the best. Another example used in Outliers would…
