Movies preceding Star Wars were in the age of the Space Race and at that time a lot about space was unknown and new, meaning it was also scary to us not to know what was out there. Though, with Star Wars came the fun of science fiction and the adventure that could be found in galaxies far far away in a different time. In recent years sci-fi has become increasingly popular as more modern ideas are incorporated into storylines and the focus has shifted on a range from superheroes to futuristic societies. In fact, in 2016 alone, there were 121 science fiction movies that came out including the Star Wars spinoff movie Rogue One and the top-US-grossing sci-fi title is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which really emphasizes how much Star Wars has influenced the market of science fiction movies and what brings in viewers. Sci-fi has even bled into movies specifically for kids such as Wall-E or E.T. which widens the market for viewers and income from not only watching them in theaters, but also watching at home on demand or buying the movie for the kids to watch whenever they please. Before Star Wars it was unlikely to most that sci-fi would boom as much as it has today and be integrated into daily life as much as it is now, but thanks to the movies and franchise it
