Age is a wonderful thing. There are many discussion about age; good and bad. This report will explain the importance of age and will cover the main issues of discrimination. From the young generations to the old generation, age has its positives and its negatives.
The ‘Coming of Age’ is a celebration of entering adulthood, you are able to do things which you would not have been able to do before you turning a certain age. Many more opportunities become open to you. Such as entering the workplace to retiring, to being able to start a family, getting married, living on your own, learning to drive and having a career, the list goes on.
Ageism is an important issue happening daily among the workplace. The older generation are not getting jobs as they are said to be too old to work whereas the younger generation are said to be too young. Thankfully todays society have the Equality Act which helps protect discrimination against many different topics but somehow ageism is still happening among the workforce. When the ‘Baby Boomers’ were born this was an extraordinary time for society during …show more content…
World War II where millions of children were born creating controversy.
2. Identity
The youth cultures today cannot be defined some say, children and teenagers are listening to their parents views, the internets views, social medias views or the tabloids views. The young generation are just following what they are being told to do. Growing up as a child you have to go to school and then you face the pressure and competition of getting into a university. You're whole school life you are told how exams determined whether you will fail in life or how you will be the best. Being told you will not get a job if you do not have a degree. Having a baby at 16 is wrong but you are old enough by law but it is not right in society. Whereas some say that you are too old to have a baby at the ages of 40. Age defines our society. With age there are different thing which are right and wrong. It is the society which makes these unwritten rules up.
3. Baby Boomers
Baby boomers a large group of people who were born between 1946 and 1964. The reason they were given the name ‘Baby Boomers’ is because statistically there was a massive increase in the number of babies being born around that time. The first year where people started to notice the extreme increase of births was in 1946, 3.4 million babies were born in the United States of America hitting a record number. Then, by they end of 1964 when the births being born started to decrease a total of a staggering 76.4 million babies had been born during the 22 year period
As the ‘baby boomers’ which were born during the world war II period, as the war ended the the money who were employed to helping make the good and supple them for the war were not needed. The woman were sent back home which gave them the perfect opportunity to start a family, because of the increase in goods families started to feel confident about having children.
Nonconformists was the name given to the ‘baby boomers’ in the 60’s. The baby boomers went against the societies social behaviour including sexuality, the renewed interest in woman rights, trying out drugs and introduced themselves to rock and roll music. These antics which the baby boomers introduced themselves to defined there generations identity. Baby Boomers were financially stable and had enough money for luxuries.
The Baby Boomers are a generation which are still spoken about.
4. Age and Culture
Age is an extremely important part of our lives. When you think of age, many different things come to your mind such as coming of age, age of retirement, scholars, young and elderly parenting and mid life crisis. Age is eventful.
Coming of age is a celebration of a child hitting adolescence. This can happen between twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eighteen or twenty one years of age, which takes place around puberty. In many Religions ‘Coming of Age’ is an important part of life. You are leaving your childhood behind and entering the world of responsibilities and become accountable for your actions. Different religions celebrate a coming of age in different ways. The jewish community throw a party called a Bar Mitzvah at the ages of twelve and thirteen whereas Americans throw a ’Sweet Sixteen’ party when the child turns sixteen. Within the UK eighteen is seen as of becoming an adult. All around the world, coming of age parties are thrown very different and at different ages. Even when you are part of the elderly generation, you are still as important. When turning 100 years of age in the United Kingdom you receive a letter of celebrations from the Queen. This achievement is huge and a wonderful part of life to celebrate as you have lived for 100 years.

5. Ageism
Ageism is discriminating a person who is being treated differently because of their age. This could be by their opinions and contributions being ignored simply because of their age. This could also be failing to recognise someone’s abilities due to their age as well as suggesting that a persons behaviour is a certain way because of their age. Ageism also known as Age Discrimination is often seen within the workplace but this is not true, today young and old people are being discriminated for their age through daily life.
Ageism is a topic which is extremely important and not spoke about enough. It is effecting everybody in today’s society whether it is allowing a sixteen year old to drive a car or for an elderly person to loose out on their job because they are ‘too old’. Ageism is creeping upon everyone in today’s society and impacting on the way we are as a person, job prospects, financial issues and the way of life.
Throughout this report I will analyse how ageism is effecting our community using different resources. Ageism is an important topic and should have more awareness.
6. Age Discrimination In the Workplace
People today are are living longer, working longer and contributing more in their later life. But by the age of forty, you can be considered as to be too old for the job you are wanting to apply for. In an article from the Telegraph, “Age discrimination ‘rooted’ in society” states that one in seven people said that having a boss in their 70s in “completely unacceptable’, while just one in 20 were unwilling to accept a boss in their 30s.” This survey found that people over 70 are viewed as more friendly than serious. The older population feel as though opportunities are not as open to them as they are not the right age for the job, but why? The older generation are living longer and are able to work but are being replaced with younger worker in their 20s with less work experience. The older generation have been working for years and have more than enough experience.
In todays society, the job world are saying that people are too young to hire because they do not have enough experience where as the older generation are then being told they are too old to hire because they may not be fit enough or on the ball as a young worker.
The CNN stated in an article that, “Nearly two-thirds of unemployed workers age 55 and older say they have been actively searching for a job for more than one year, compared to just one-third of younger workers”. It is shocking that the older generation are finding it hard to get a job as most older people are trying to look after their families, pay their bills and buy food.
7. Age Discrimination in Under 25 Year Olds
Today, the younger generation, by some people are being told they are too lazy and inexperienced. Workplaces are not accepting them because they do not have enough experience. How do you expect a person under 25 to get a job when they are not being given the experience of working in the real world. The older generation are saying that the younger generation are unmotivated and don't have enough ability.
Young people should not be discriminated from work as they are ambitious and want to work. Their technology skills are new and fresh with the new technology used today. There skills used with the technology today will be better than the older workforce. They are quick and will bring in fresh new ideas benefiting their work place.
8. The Equality Act
The Equality Act is a law which protects you from discrimination. The Act secures and protects you from discrimination within race, sexuality, gender, marriage, disabilities and religion and beliefs.
When a person of any age, mostly elderly applies for a job and does not get accepted. The Equality Act makes sure that this is not because of their age being to old or to young. The workplace much provide and show a acceptable reason for discrimination on the basis of their age.
The Equality Act have two different types of discrimination such as Direct Discrimination and Indirect Discrimination. Direct Discrimination is when a person is treated differently because of a certain characteristic. An example of Direct Discrimination would be if an elderly woman was not allowed to join a fitness class at a gym because of her age. The second type of discrimination is Indirect Discrimination which is when there is a rule that applies to everyone but because of your age you are at a disadvantage.
The Equality Act does protect us as individuals from training and education, clubs and employment but unfortunately even in some areas there are still discrimination issues.
9. Cut Back: Facing Ageism
Cut back is an amazing documentary highlighting the key issues of how Ageism is effecting the elderly within the workplace.
Patricia Sahertian directed a documentary called “Cut Back: Facing Ageism’. This documentary brings to our attention the real life daily issues that work seekers among us today are facing. This documentary interviews workers who are seeking jobs with an extraordinary amount of years of experience who are not being given work or are being replaced by a younger employee because they are not fit enough for the job. These people have gone for hundreds of interviews and are not being given work because they are too old. The older generation are starting to feel “useless”, “worthless” and “numb”. We live in an ageing population where older workers are able to work longer as they are able to keep up and they do have the knowledge and
experience.
A woman in her 40s told her story in this documentary and has been declined by job after job. She has over 10 years of experience and had started to question whether or not she should take her 10 years of work off her resume as they were not wanting someone with this much work.
This documentary is eye opening and shows you how serious Ageism is within the workplace.
10. Conclusion
There are many different views and opinions used within this report. It shows you that Age is a celebration but it is also a discrimination. Throughout this report you are able to see just how important age is and how it can effect lives daily. Age within different religions and cultures are very different. This report covers and analyses a wide range of different aspects of age and how it may effect people in different way. Age can be a celebration but it can also encounter problems when joining the workplace. Ageism within the workplace has a long way to come in realising how the younger generation should not be discriminated because they are unexperienced and that the older generation should not be discriminated because they are too old.
