• What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society? In my readings this week I learned the meaning of ageism in our society. Ageism is the “prejudice and discrimination against older adults." (Racial and Ethnic Groups, Ch.13, pg.395.) Ageism influences the presence of diversity in society by restricting the elderly of what they are capable of, or presumed incapable of. Some may not hire an older individual because he/she assumes the individual will not be able to perform well in the work environment with others. The elderly are viewed as ill, fragile, and may have physical restrictions. Another way ageism influences society is the youth have a fear of aging because of the negative concepts of the elderly.

While this study has demonstrated the extent of ageism in East Tennessee, it does not necessarily demonstrate how society should combat it. As a result, future research should be conducted to reveal the most effective means of eliminating ageism. Furthermore, additional research should be performed on other populations and more representative samples, such as from different age groups, ethnicities, and socio-economic statuses. Data from other countries or cultures (i.e. where the elderly are embraced) may be useful in demonstrating to Western societies the benefits and importance of elderly citizens. Furthermore, information from a variety of populations will provide a more all-encompassing view of the topic of ageism and will perhaps pinpoint a better approach to fighting it. Additional studies should make use of both quantitative and qualitative methods. It would be interesting to compare the results from an open-ended interview or case study with those from a laboratory study. By utilizing mixed-methods, the field of gerontology is exposed to a more comprehensive view of…

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) was passed by Congress to make it unlawful for an employer to base employment decisions or discriminate based on a worker’s age. It was designed to address to eliminate ageism based on stereotypes about the weakened skills of older individuals by forcing employers to judge older workers on their merits, not age-based myths, prejudices or stereotypes. The ADEA covers workers age 40 and older. The ADEA was amended by Older Workers’ Benefit Protection Act (OWBPA) in 1990 and 1998 to give workers increased protection. Due to the aging workforce, age discrimination would become more prevalent. Workplace age stereotypes are beliefs and expectations about workers based on their age (Hamilton…

First I would like to discuss employment discrimination. According to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employers from discriminating based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin (EEOC, 2014). For example, a person age 55 could receive offensive remarks about their age. There was a lady who worked for Federal Express she was…

Every corporation is aware of employment discrimination lawsuits increasing on a yearly basis. However, one type of lawsuit that employers often overlook is the case of age discrimination. When the average girl sees a super model such as Britney spears wearing Abercrombie and Fitch they think the key to being beautiful and popular is to match their wardrobes. Age discrimination can be obvious such as hiring a younger, inexperienced, more attractive person for a position than an older person with a strong background in a similar position. Alternatively, it can be subtle. Transferring an older person when the person reaches 60 to a less demanding, unrewarding job, filling in the vacancy with a younger employee, or inheriting a new boss that creates a miserable environment for the administrative assistant so the person will quit. Even if the older worker were with a lower paying, lower level job, this still would be difficult because the employer would have probably started at the bottom of a new job where salary is not comparable. Recently a bill was introduced to accept positions that earn 70% or more of past salaries. Older workers also suffer from the discrimination that younger workers prefer to work around people like themselves. Younger workers felt older workers were like their mom and dad and did not want to supervise them, felt they were less competent, they might know more than…

Sociological AgingAging is a natural process of life that, with the exception of premature death, all individuals must face. At some point in life, one must realize that his or her life has shifted from what it once was. Physical appearances change, with muscularity and physical strength diminishing. Family size changes with the both the deaths of some members and the births of new members. Social life changes, with desires to enjoy one’s own company becoming more dominant. Though these changes should be representative of a life well lived, many individuals fear becoming older, due to the negative connotations placed upon aging.“Sociologists have termed the homogenization of older people into one category through the use of language and discourse as ‘ageism’. This means imposing negative stereotyping onto people on the sole basis of their age” (Hayes, 2014, p. 239). According Timmermann (2017), ageism occurs in society in the even the most subtle forms, such as assuming older individuals prefer not to use modern technology, expecting older individuals as being incapable of making…

According to the American Psychology Association, older adults are defined as “persons 65 years of age or older (APA, Practitioners, 2002) The older adult population is separated by two subpopulations called “young old”, “older old”, and “oldest old.”(APA, Practitioners, 2002) “Young old” describe those between the ages of 65-74, “older old” describes those between the ages of 75 and 84, and oldest old refers to those 85 and older. (APA, Practitioners, 2002) Other important subpopulations include the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) older adults and racially diverse subpopulations. (Aging and Health Report) The ageing LGBT subpopulation is an overlooked part of the older adult population that is rarely addressed (Aging and Health Report.) They have the highest number of health issues as well as the most discrimination of the older adult population. (Aging and Health Report)According to a report done by the National Institute on Aging, “Nearly one half have a disability and nearly one-third report depression” (Aging and Health Report.) Another subpopulation of older adults that is significant is the racially discriminated older adults. (Liat, 2011) In an article published in Aging and Mental Health, both black and Latino older adults reported a higher percentage of everyday discrimination than white older adults (Liat, 2011)…

Discrimination of any form should be prohibited and abandoned. In this contemporary era, it is frequent that we come across many incidences of discrimination at work based on age. Many hold a theory that discrimination against elderly employees is fair, on the other hand, many believe that discrimination against older workers should be made illegal. In my opinion, it should be an offensive crime. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of arguments before reaching a reasoned conclusion.…
