The Importance Of Staying

Sickness, cold, starvation, and death. These are just a few things we must deal with. It is December in the year 1777 at Valley Forge, a place not big enough to be called a village, 18 miles from Philadelphia. It is two years into the Revolutionary War, my nine month enlistment is almost up and I have to decide, ‘Should I stay, or quit?’ To quit would mean for me to leave and go home to my family, but staying would help my country possibly win the war. I have decided to re-enlist, for honor, knowing we are receiving help, and the content we still feel content. I am Thomas Paine describe the honor we will receive in an essay General Washington read to us. This encourages me to re-enlist because I know that even if I die, I will be honored
With Congress’s help we will receive food and new clothing. With new supplies we will become stronger. Fg will be easier and we will be fed properly. I know that because of their help we might win this war. But with so many leaving, it can get harder. Even when it is cold and there is sickness, the soldiers here are still content and cheery. In Document C, Dr. Waldo describes the soldiers after sickness emerges, “The Army which has been surprisingly healthy hitherto, now begins to grow sickly from continued fatigues they have suffered this Campaign. Yet they still show a spirit of Alacrity [cheerful willingness] and Contentment not to be expected from so young Troops.” We are determined to win the war and that is encouraging me to stay and fight. Even in these terrible conditions, with horrible clothes and food, we remain content. I will stay because we will be honored, congress is helping, and we are determined to win. So with these reasons, I have decided to re-enlist and I refuse to quit. If a lot of soldiers had quit then our army would be weakened and the British could have won. I find that my fellow soldiers decisions are understandable, most have family to return to, but I believe not deeing this to the end is pointless, I need to fight
