Arthur Miller presents the insecurities of Loman through different quotes in the play. For example, in page 38, Loman says that, “he feels lonely when business is bad.” This is the first time he lets us know about his feelings. As well, in page 51, when Ben is about to leave to Africa, Willy confessed to him that he is all he has, and that sometimes he feels “kind of temporary” about himself. By saying these words Willy expresses his fear about being alone,
and admits he’s kind of lost at the moment.
Therefore, after Ben leaves, Willy feels he has been left by his brother and now he doesn’t have anyone to help him. In this part of the play, the author is asking us to understand Willy, because in real life when we are in trouble we usually look up to our family for help, yet, this was not the case of Willy Loman, he had no one and felt desperate to find a way out.
Unfortunately, as the story goes on, things get worst to our dear salesman, because after being abandoned by his brother, he’s also abandoned by his son Biff, after he finds out that his father has been lying this whole time. Biff gets so upset that he disappears for a long time. This affects Willy so much, because as a father, now he feels he has also been left by his son, who he really believes could be like him one day.
This teaches us that sometimes dishonesty and loneliness could take us to desolation and to take desperate decisions. However, sometimes is necessary to accept our mistakes and leave our fears behind to start a new beginning.
