The Inevitability Of Death In Stranger Than Fiction

Our lives are often fluid and abstract; ever-changing, uncertain, and infinite in terms of possibilities. Life, however, has one distinct trait that makes it what it is: death. Everything begins through birth and ends in death – it is often said that the uncertainty of life and the ever-looming possibility of death are two things that motivate one to make the most out of everything the world has to offer. A prime example of the aforementioned statement can be found in the movie Stranger Than Fiction, starring Will Ferrell. In addition to tackling the raw aspects of life, Stranger Than Fiction also supplied watchers with three life lessons, which are, “The inevitability of death can cause people to evaluate their existence,” “Thinking from different perspectives can change one’s life,” and “The correct path may be the unconventional one.”
However, the inevitability of death can often cause people to evaluate their existence, because it signals that life is brief and that we cannot escape its ending no matter how much we try.In the movie, this is reflected in Harold making the most out of everything during his last days upon realizing that he will die. The simple act of Harold foregoing his ‘daily routine’ to pursue new things (such as learning the guitar) can be considered evidence of just how much the knowledge of death can change one person. I can relate this to my life in such a way that upon knowledge of the inescapability of death I have changed the way in which I view the world and both the people and thing around me – the sheer reality of death has prompted me to make the most out of what the world has to offer while there is still
