As we were told when we were young children, too much of a good thing is not a good thing. The same phrase can apply to aspects in lives now. Literature shows how pride can be a good thing, but too much of it is not. In fact, the opposite of pride, humility, is an extremely important value. The Bible and Edith Hamilton’s Mythology both show how a lack of the value humility will result in consequence through characterization and plot.…
In the sixth century people believed in gods and goddess who were seen as the enforcers of morality, punishing wickedness and rewarding goodness. For these people who believed in the gods if for some reason they failed at something or if something bad happed to them they believed that there was some wickedness going on that caused the gods to allow these hardships to fall upon them. Therefore in these difficult times it became easy for people…
One of the most interesting facets of the ancient Greek religion was the hero cult. A hero in this time was considered to be greater than a human but less than a god. The hero cult essentially united a group of unrelated people in a kin-like manner, which in turn made the bond between these individuals even stronger. The archeological evidence for the hero cult begins around the second half of the 8th century BC (Seaford, 109). On an unrelated note, the term polis in ancient Greece was defined to be the body of citizens, which is why polis is often translated to city-state. The interesting fact concerning these two is that the polis first emerged in the Archaic period, which…

In Greek Mythology women are often portrayed as women having unfortunate and miserable lives because of a god or goddess or both. One example of a woman who fulfills this description is Io. One day, Zeus falls in love with Io and as usual Zeus got his way and with some tender words he convinced Io of his love for her. With Hera's jealousy on top of Zeus, Zeus turns Io into a cow in order to protect her from Hera. Io being a frenzied cow gets an unfortunate life doing nothing better than wandering around. Another woman who is unfortunate in Greek Mythology is Echo. Echo is a nymph that was punished by Hera because Hera thought that Echo was having an affair with Zeus. To let out her anger, Hera forbids Echo from using…

Storytelling is a way to explain the unknown, provide moral and ethical guidelines, and put good and bad human interactions into context for children. With the gods, heroines, and villains in Greek Mythology, children can be taught about values, courage, treachery, weakness, and the flaws of human nature. While the myths of the Greek gods are centered in the religion and culture of the ancient times, the stories continue to be parables to teach and entertain children today. The mystery and supernatural fears of ancient Greece have been overtaken by modern times, but the fundamentals of human nature remain unchanged and create opportunities to teach in a way that captures the imaginary…
A myth is a story that is told by people from an earlier time period. They explain what they think to be happening or how they view the world at that point in time. Many of them focus on gods, goddesses, or a mythical creature in order to explain the events that define their culture. The most common myths are within Greek mythology that help to explain culture and gave the world around them a meaning. These were an important part of their everyday life and help to explain religious practices and help influence art and literature years after its…
Today, criminals are punished for their crimes by going to jail or prison or being on probation. But what was it like in Ancient Greece? After the Dark Ages, about 1200-900 BC, the Ancient Greeks had no official laws or punishments. Murders were settled by the victims family killing the murderer, but this was difficult if they were elderly or female. This often began endless blood feuds. It was not until the seventh century BC that the Greeks began to establish laws. Around 620 BC, Draco wrote the first law for Greece. This law said that exile was the penalty for murder and was the only one of Draco's laws that Solon kept when he became law giver in 594 BC. Foreign slaves were often employed as police men and women in Ancient Greece. After somebody reported a crime, if somebody was arrested, an informant would receive half of fine charged to the criminal. In Athens, criminals were tried before a jury of 200 or more citizens picked at random. Going to prison was not an usual punishment for the people of Greece. In cases involving rape, theft, adultery, and murder, the accused got a written summons that told them when they had to appear before the magistrate.…
They believed that anything and everything has a spirit, with the invisible connection between these sprits forming the perceptible products of war, weather, and well-being. Dependent on the world around them and wanting a positive outcome for any occasion, they relied on spirits such as the rain, animals, and various landforms to bring about a good outcome. Thus, an assortment of ritual dances and ceremonies attributed to particular spirits were performed according to the community’s need. Paleolithic art also reflects the importance of food and fertility in their culture, and were probably made to aid in controlling their environment. Shamans, people who could wield certain mystic powers, were also deemed valuable and fearful because of the impact their abilities could have on the community. Communities were ordered by the gradual ascendance of relationships. The establishment of social groups over time led to the formation of families, which became the base for clans, and these clans would combine with other clans. Hence, early tribes formed. A government formed with it. Within the tribe, chiefs were the head and the glue for the people, as well as religious…
“The characters, stories, themes and lessons of Greek mythology have shaped art and literature for thousands of years. They appear in Renaissance paintings such as Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Raphael’s Triumph of Galatea and writings like Dante’s Inferno; Romantic poetry and libretti; and scores of more recent novels, plays and films.” I think that it is great that the ancient Greeks came up with these myths. When I first started reading and listening about the Greek myths, I thought they were totally absurd. However, I now think that some myths tell entertaining stories and teach great lessons. Through this paper I will tell you about one of the myths we share today in our culture, share what Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung had to say about mythic structures of the human psyche, and explain why myths such as these bring us together socially and culturally. Throughout history, spirituality has consistently been used to further the control one has over their circumstances. Whether it be attempting to banish demons thought to cause disease or praying for victory in times of war, the sociological trend of humans relying on spirituality when attempting to overcome their struggles is ubiquitous. This especially held true for both Native Americans (natives) and enslaved African Americans, as an immense reliance on plants intersected with spirituality at the foundation of their healing methods and perspectives on health. Furthermore, both of these groups heavily relied on their traditional healing methods as a means of resisting the dehumanization which arose from their oppression; natives used them…
A tale of rape and suicide, this founding myth tells about Roman’s honor based society. The main characters, Lucretia and Sexus, each play iconic roles of both innocence and guilt, providing two completely contrasting perspectives of the story. Lucretia was a highly honorable woman who believed strongly in protecting her sexuality. Regrettably she made this very apparent, and as such a beautiful untouched woman, she became irresistible to Sexus. As the story goes, Sexus raped her a week or so after meeting her in her own home. This event caused her to feel tremendous guilt and eventually suicide because she believed her body was soiled. Brutus (unsure of his role in the story) had then shunned all Roman kings due to Sexus’s actions, which in turn gave the other Roman kings a bad reputation. According to my interpretation, this story is meant to tell the lesson of being and remaining as an honorable citizen, no matter the circumstance because one unethical action can cause serious damage elsewhere.…
