During an age of dramatic social change, pop culture during the 1920s was characterized by the flapper, automobiles, speakeasies, and jazz. The twenties was the introduction of large scale use of electricity, movies, radios, and cars. Various significant changes in lifestyle and culture were brought about by consumer demand. Dance halls became alive with jazz music and people dancing into the night because of electric lights. The movie industry
began to blossom in the 1920s with movie palaces that could house up to 3,000 people and the production of 800 movies being created each year.
With the introduction of leisure time, many americans priorities changed. Many felt that having a car was more important than a bathtub because you couldn’t go out into town in a tub.
The 1920s was a time when many people rejected many traditional moral standards. The most stereotypical symbol of the “Roaring Twenties” is the flapper. The restrictive clothing of the Victorian era was over, and the new style was liberating. Defined as a young woman with bobbed hair and who wore short skirts. Being described as a flapper wasn’t just a style of dress, it was an attitude, typically a woman who says “unladylike” things and participates in drinking and smoking. They would go to Speakeasies and listen to jazz bands, and flappers would dance the night away.
“Speakeasy” was a word popular amongst bartender’s, meaning that people were supposed to avoid attention being brought to them while buying alcoholic beverages by “speaking easy” and not talking quickly or nervously. Code words were frequently used for alcohol and speakeasy establishments so that law officials and the government were kept in the dark from finding out about the clubs. Speakeasies mainly revolved around gangs, who supplied the liquor, because prohibition was in full effect. You could typically find a speakeasy anywhere in the United States of America and they were more frequent in cities. Whether they were underground, or hidden in stores or businesses, in every urban establishment you entered, most likely you were not far off from an illegal “gin joint”.
