Environmental factors influencing positive behaviors A positive engagement in school provides an alternative environment that affords a roadmap toward achievement, competence, and a prosocial self-image that contrasts with the negative messages that accompany adversity (Arditti, 2015). A child can be living in poverty which would tend to have a negative impact; however, through the school system the child can gain positive behaviors due to the positive environmental factors the school offers. Many school systems offer after school activities involving help with homework, free clubs to take part in, and sporting groups for children to take part in. The child is then around positive role models which will increase their sense of self-worth in turn increasing their positive behaviors. To develop a community program it is important to know what issues are within the community. Many rural areas do not have the community programs a larger city community would have. The community where I live is considered rural and not many programs exist where children can get all that they need. The community program I would develop would be a community center for after school hours and hours on the weekend. It would be called The Waterloo Youth
